Looking for a good V or U shaped headphone to buy. Ive had some good suggestions. the Dt990. Also i heard the Audeze EL-8C closed is a good V shaped headphone. Does anyone know if theres a difference between the wood version and the Titanium? Any other suggestions?
Youâve done the Fostex Purplehearts?
No but i got the Fostex Ebony
Just got my DT990/600ohm and I can already tell that these are keepers
In a very quick search.
There is a open and closed version of the âwoodâ ones.
So probably a noticeable difference just there. They both come with stock lightning cable.
As for the more special one the Titanium. There is a AMP/DSP/DAC lighting cable included.
So with the special cable ->> Titanium closed and âwoodâ closed will also sound different at some degree. Still it is the same headphone.
Only color difference and as we all know. Color does sound different.
Beyers DT 990, DT 1990, T1, T5P, 177x Go. Dan Clark: Aeon open X and Aeon 2 for more neutral. You like more laid back so T1 or aeons I think you will love considering your tastes in sound.
I donât know the Beyers, but Iâm not sure the Aeons are aggressive enough in presentation for Ant. I have read, though, that the T1.2 and 990 Premium 600ohm are just under painful on the treble vs the 1990 and 990 lower ohm, both being V shaped open backs. Could be interesting to see where the Fidelio X3 ends up too, but the X2s were a pretty laid back V. I wonder about something like a Sony MDR-Z7M2 or MDR-Z1R. The Z7M2 is supposed to smooth the treble a touch vs. the Z1R.
That is why I recommended the Aeons though I wonât say they are very aggressive actually they are rather a little in between more laid back with a nice wide presentation to them yet feel like a closed back with a decent V signature the rolled treble prevents sibilance and the Tuning pads let you alter it quite a bit. As for the T1.2 and 990 these are indeed very bright headphones however, you can dial them back quite a bit. In the 990s case it responds well to certain amps that can pretty drastically drop that treble frequency peak but you can also remove the pad and put some 4 ply toilet paper behind the foam on the driver and it will easily drop down the treble as well. T1.2 isnât as sibilant but this is resolved again by amp choice but also Dekoni Elite Velour imo and I believe you can do the same trick as the dt 990 there itâs just a little more complex. 1990 is said to be a neutral bright and the higher ohms of the dt 990 are less sharp and smoothed out from my experience as for the dt 1990 itâs brightness is pretty easy to fix again proper amp and just replace the pads to teh dekoni elite velour this will drop the treble peak in line with the bass frequency so it doesnât overwhelm the mix.
Pretty curious on this myself, I have the X2 HR which was a lot warmer than the original X2 which I didnât audition. If its a nice wide non sibilant V signature it could be interesting to pick up provided the price is a good bargain though with V signatures your still competing with beyer.
Donât get me wrong, I love my Aeon X, but also having the Helios to compare to as Antâs current baseline preferred signature, I think heâs probably looking for something a little more aggressive, which would be the Beyers, I think. I donât think Iâve ever heard anything else thatâs quite as âin your faceâ with presentation. The closest I currently own might be the Elex, which has a much wider stage and more vocal presence. Itâs not a strong V shape signature, but the LCD-1 is a little more on the aggressive side with portions of the mids slightly pulled back. Good extension in the bass, but not elevated like the Helios.
Yeah i like agressive/exciting headphones more. but those are rare
So, go grab T5P or T1 then. Should suit your preferences. Though I am rather curious on alternatives myself I should add. If theres another awesome alternative to beyers or helios I am all ears. I found Audeze to be on the darker side of the headphones so it wasnât really in my area and I have yet to pull the trigger on my focal I setup an audition with the audio store though for an Elegia and Clear
Im very interested in the T5P. Zeos liked it and said the treble isnt too bad. but expensive! idk.
If I recall correctly there was two versions of the T5P actually which were the low 32 ohm which is what you see on the beyer store and the other version which if memory serves me was a Semi open back version that was designed more for studios and had around 150 ohms on it. T5P is one of the flagships for beyers portable headphone lineup. T1 also has this oddity in its lineup as while the Semi open back version is not on the beyer store the T1P was another semi open back yet labelled as balanced. I do not have any experience with these alternatives but I have heard some good reviews on them. These have the Astell & Kern label on them though for the alternatives when I looked them up despite bein a beyer
Thats the frequency for T1 in purple and T5p in Green both in their 2nd gen open back vs closed back. Though here is drops T1P https://drop.com/buy/astell-kern-beyerdynamic-ak-t1p-headphones I would love to audition these to see what the difference is as I love the T1
Comparison with the graphs above vs the DT 1990s frequency see here.
Using its 2 pads in the frequency and the dekoni elite in that picture. Analytical in purple, Dekonis in green, and Balanced in blue. Compare these to the EL-8 you mentioned of course you have the closed back titanium and the open back variations seen here
Thats the titanium and the one below is open back seen here
