Alright I will give that a shot, Will chime in later with further results and more info when I get the 177x
So, I wanted to chime in on my own post here and ask something that I haven’t really thought much on but I keep seeing people who own these headphones. Whatsup with the audioquest nighthawk carbons? I can’t seem to find a place to purchase them anywhere and amazons out of stock. Are they good? whats their sound signature? What price point were/are they at? Do you recommend them? If you read my posts I use dt 990 and sundara lovem to death are these worth for someone of my sound taste? Could use some pros and cons and what not while I wait for the other headphones to come in for auditioning
Pretty unique headphones overall, they were recently discontinued a few years ago with their carbon model, you can still find both carbons and og floating around for the 250 ish price point or possibly lower. The carbons are similar to the og but toned down in strangeness a bit and also come with a shorter mic cable and 2 pairs of pads. They are pretty awesome for around the 300 mark, they have a really unique presentation, great bass and midrange timbre and impact, pretty natural, and a bit recessed treble, so a tad darker but not an issue imo. Also great build and comfort. They retailed at 700 for the og, and then I think the carbons came out at 500. I personally think they are worth around the 350 mark and not really over. I think if you wanted something fairly different from the 990 they might be worth a try, not sure if it would exactly meet your preferences though, but imo it doesn’t seem like you have a fully established preference yet from what I have read at least
I have a very wide taste in sound apparently lmao as such I was curious on these. Disappointing that they were discontinued. Guess I will have to look round to see if I can’t find a copy. Tried ebay and found nuttin and no such luck on Head-fi
I do see something weird on the cup though so not sure if that’s a mark or just a strange angle
was gonna say i just seen one on there for $200 even. There isnt a return policy on them… these resellable you think if i dont like them?
If you get it for 200 then yeah, these have been getting snapped up
alright, bought it. Tis gone. Will try it… if not will sell it… according to the damn prices on these things may be worth more than what I paid for them. not sure what he was thinking on this price other than gota get rid of it… but ill happily take that lol
seems to me I saw several on usaudiomart.com… Might be worth a look… Nighthawks are different thats for sure… Probably the one headphone I would not part with.
Wanted to tag @Ex_Fitzy let ya know I got a shipping time for the dt 177x I will post it later when they arrive it says Friday but with shipping being so crazy its been in shipment hell for a few days.
hmm, this probably belongs in a more casual sense but I literally know nothing on this headphone… just that its expensive and was normally priced at $1,500. Anyone got knowledge on Audio Technica N90Q? Says it actually changes it signature based on preference and your ears or something? Thought it was interesting and the design is just gorgeous for a headphone.
Hey man. Have you gotten the 177x? Anything to report?
holy crap, I forgot to review that to you!! Yeah yeah, give me a second I will type up my thoughts on it.
Build: much like the other beyers built very well sturdy and looks good. Does by no means actually feel cheap. These are definitely heavier than the 770s but they distribute weight just fine. I didn’t have any discomfort with these but when it came to the pads I preferred the leather pads… I ended up changing these to an XL brainwavz perforated pad upon Z reviews suggestion and it fixed alot for me. Comes with a 4 pin xlr connection for the side of the cup meaning you can wire it up for a balanced connection no seperate coiled cables.
Impedance: These actually sound good on phones and lower grade tech like console sound cards… these definitely really don’t need an amp needless to say they do respond well to amps to the point you can definitely tell the difference upon plugging it into different amps. These were really balanced sounding off my liquid spark.
Sound Signature: Definite U shaped but also catering towards a neutral. lows are still boosted Highs are still boosted and it shows meanwhile mids are recessed but its so slightly recessed its hard to tell. Originally the 770 and 1770 had a lot of sibilance issues meanwhile, this I found no sibilance. Lows are punchy but not as wild as a 770 however, I will definitely say the bass on these are better than an x2 hr fidelio. Mids are better like I said not as recessed vocals sound a bit more forward. Velour pads definitely makes the highs forward and brings it to borderline uncomfortable to me. Sheepskins definitely dials the highs back and makes lows really prominent however I feel that the perf pads not only added more breathability but a bit more sound stage and a bit cleaner to me. Sound staging is definitely not as big as a 1990 but it’s definitely better than a 770 and imaging is pretty damn accurate with a very nice accurate seperation to sound. These do sound like a warmer less treble version of a 1990
In game: no real problems here… while I have had issues with some closed backs due to lack of sound stage these are just right in most general cases… while you won’t have that incredible 360 sound from open backs here it does sound fairly open and pretty airy to suit that just fine. Super comfortable and when an explosion goes off unlike the dt 1990 these really come to life when the bass hits
While they were only a borrowed pair if it helps make a difference… I have highly considered getting my own copy since I enjoyed them so much. Very very good pair of closed backs with multiple uses and they sound great even for gaming. Good All rounder and still good in competitive. However, there is a common conception that too much bass in competitives is a hinderance… I will agree to this statement… while you can turn down the bass on these it doesn’t change the fact that the bass is pretty hefty on these to a fault. Personally I love bass cause I play well regardless but if I was really taking it fully serious I would turn down that bass a bit
