Help comparing headphones for birthday gift?

Will come back and read replys from people as I have stuff to do. thank you all for helping me on this!

Okay so, trying to make a compiled small list here to look more into. Per the usual I would assume that Open back would be better just in general here due to enhanced sound performance? What would you guys say least in YOUR opinion would be the best headphone/headset with either a mic already on it or compatibility with something like the v moda. I would say modmic but thats a much higher extra cost so we can go ahead and ignore that selection. I know @M0N is saying the msr7, @RiceGuru you mentioned custom one pro plus and takstar pro 82. All of them look to be closed backs? Except custom one which strangely says it has a setting to change that I assume thats more of a virtual sound setting. I don’t see any open back recommendations…I did read somewhere on this site about some sort of cooler master headphone too that had a mic on it but I can’t seem to find that. of course you have the ā€œgaming headsetā€ brands too which most of absolute garbage and closed back outside of maybe sennheiser game ones and gsp 500. Astros are junk. Could use some more info if possible. If it helps while hes into guitar a lot I find him listening to a lot of techno strangely enough not sure if he plans to take up keyboard but pretty sure that’s just his favorite style of music anytime I asked him his favorite sound he’s always made the comment that he just loves the beats in techno music. So I would need a good headphone thats good for gaming and techno music and preferrably open back with the microphone either already on the headphone or attachable like v moda. I asked him what he likes in a sound a more open sound or what and he mentioned a nice melding of the sounds in techno is nice if that helps any. Of course he has no idea im buying him a headphone but he loves to talk music.

So a good open back with a mix is the sennheiser pc37x, it’s fairly solid for gaming but for music it’s kinda meh imo, I don’t think it would work well with the listed type of music. Same goes with the audio techinca ADG1X but I like it for music a bit less than the 37x. The shp9500 works with a vmoda and is ok but imo not my preference, but it is an option (I think it’s a bit too sloppy and unrefined). There just aren’t many open backs headsets, and also not as many that are compatible with a boompro. There is the Fidelio x2 which is a wider bassier more fun headphone, but personally not up my alley (although they are decent)

I do think the Beyer custom game would be pretty sweet for what he might be looking for, even though it’s closed, it’s pretty wide and has good space

Well I will chime in on that pc37x and say while it’s alright im not a fan of the mic… While I cant say i used the pc37x I will say I used the actual Game ones and if the sound ever got to loud it had some feedback through its mic so its definitely not a high quality comfort wise they were alright though and overall sound wasn’t to shabby. I think it just boils down to his preferences though like he prefers a more melded sound he plays games but hes a very casual type of player and he loves techno and a good beat. Having to have that microphone addition makes studying and trying to find the ideal headphone for him complicated as hell especially since I know very little on techno

i was looking at the custom game and all it says it can be a open back… but how does that work when it definitely looks closed… have you tested these by chance? whats the difference on custom game and custom one pro plus

I dont think thats the case. I believe they are talking about one of it’s features where you can change the plate around to a different plate which is one of the feature of the custom one line

The custom game is def a closed back, it just has adjustable venting that can be used to tune the bass. I have heard them yes, and they are actually pretty solid. My preference still leans towards the dt770 250 ohm if you go off a closed back from them, but that being said the game wasn’t a slouch from my experience and was pretty solid sounding (slight v shape, good space for a closed back, good detail without an amp)

So this is the case with most headsets, I quite like the mic on the senn gaming headsets, but you are correct in that it can be sensitive.

they are very similar except one has a different mic pretty much

You can vary them from closed to semi-open.

The backing plates are just for show.

I suppose the more bottom line here is would you say that’s the best headphones in this case? the custom one or custom game? I know we’ve brought up quite a few here just trying to figure out what would have the best sound in this case. Assuming a more balanced sound would be best

lol why is it everytime lately when I go looking for a headset for either me or someone else it ends up bein a beyer… seriously, their headphones are pretty on point. If you guys do think this is probably the best bet here this… Game one or custom game please do let me know… also you said the mic was different @M0N which one would be the better microphone would you know? I would like to get whatever one ordered soon so I can get it wrapped up for him. DT 770s ive heard good things but arent they incompatible with the v moda or beyers version of a microphone plug in? I did also hear some good things about that philips fidelio. Do you guys think these beyers are better?

I would go the game version for the better mic imo

nope, non detach cable, you would either have to go modmic or a clip on mic of some sort, also the good 770s require a decent amp

Personally I do, but I do think the x2 is the more fun sounding headphone and it would come down to preference here

its the way they make their drivers them and sennheiser are pretty on point when it comes to imaging performance. beyerdynamic when it comes to closed backs and open backs they really do exce;l ath their price bracket in respect to imaging and especially for their closed backs soundstage as they have a odd capability of making wider sounding closed back headphones. and they are one of the few companies that know how to price their headphones well. to be affordable

I really like the fidelio for the impact athey bring to guns and explosions they have a very fun sound for single player games imaging is a weaker than beyers and due to sharper treble beyers have they tend to be better for gaming.

Yeah I would agree

just now realized I typed ā€œGame oneā€ instead of ā€œcustom oneā€ compared to ā€œcustom gameā€ from beyer. So it seems I have narrowed it down to three then. Fidelio brings more fun while the other two are essentially the same I think? they are definitely priced different. from there it boils down to preference here. I’m unable to test these… but since its techno and gaming its a hard toss up… no idea lol

Think I will go ahead and go with the beyers… bout to have a really lengthy post pop up though. Hope he likes these
