Help comparing headphones for birthday gift?

Hey there, so I need to get a gift for my guitarist nephew. He currently has a JBL- LIVE 650BTNC wireless noise cancelling over ear headphone that he uses for gaming and his music. I was wanting to ask for some recommendations in the $150 range roughly. I already have a 58x jubilee that I was planning to test that has yet to come in and wasn’t sure how that would work or if there would be a better alternative. He probably prefers wireless but I already know that wireless cuts sound quality. I am pretty sure he doesn’t own an amp/dac and hes a console gamer which makes things further complicated. He is currently building a gaming pc but for the time being his guitar and his console are his go to for music and gaming. His family tends to swear by JBL for some odd reason.

it’s hard to say hmmmm the 58x are phenominal but like you said wireless is kind of the trend atm. would he not be cool with iems? because if so you could get some sweet iems and a bluetooth adapter and basically have bluetooth iems with great sound quality

Maybe a DT770 32 or 80 ohm?

i’m not necessarily recommending these in particular but say a Tin T2 with a bluetooth adapter or something of the kind. fully cuts the wires

yeah the 770 is pretty good, i have the 32 ohm and ive had someone call it too analytical tho.

if we are going the closed back beyerdynamic route I would not reccomend the 80 or 32 ohm 770 rather I would go for a custom one pro plus it sounds like a headphone made to be low impedance and tuned like so. the akg k371 as well the one more triple driver over ear are all withing budget for easy to drive closed backs that are decent for gaming.

in the open back space the 58x does exist as well as the fidelio x2 hr which is really fun bass open back.

if we are going wireless honestly for console your best bet is going for a wireless gaming headset

step away for a minute and multiple responses lol. alright, so to start with IEMS would definitely be a no go as it needs to be headphones, I am not sure if he prefers closed backs but I know for sure he has only used closed and never an open back, he lives upstairs so an open back could be better for hearing outside sources i.e. his parents call him downstairs, the dt 880s are a weaker version of the 990s as far as I am aware, I did think about the 770s and the custom one pro he doesn’t own an external mic either so that is a thing, gaming headsets definitely don’t have the greatest sound and the only ones that are deemd “good” I think were the steel series arctis wireless and audeze mobius, I already own a pair of 58x jubilee which is why I brought up asking if there was a better one or this would work… the only issue is like i said he doesn’t own a mic let alone an amp / dac just a guitar amp

How does his current headphones measure up against the 58x, fidelio x2 hr, dt990 pro, dt770, k731, and custom one pro plus? Lastly, it would definitely have to be low impedance to where he wouldn’t need an amp/dac so I am not sure how these headphones would work out. Info please? I can always buy him a cheap external mic so I am not really to worried on that right now anyway.

Going to make a further note, I do have my v moda boom mic laying around. So I guess if the headphones have a jack for that bonus points to that headphone and I would be more considering towards it.

the custom one pro plus and takstar pro 82 are both compatible i believe the both are pretty easy to drive.

I’d ask you which one you recommend rice but I have a feeling you would end up saying another set of dt990s lol. I will look more into these later today and respond, probably with more questions, less someone else chimes in with their opinion or recommendation

nah in this case the 990 isnt really my pick.

and the 990 isnt really a headphone I like to reccomend cause it can be quite polarizing

It can be for sure lol

@Falenkor if you are gaming and want vmoda support, the audio technica msr7 is pretty sweet, detailed brighter signature

A form of mic support in general but very great headphones is what I am ideally looking for. whether its a built in mic or has v moda support is fine. Just you know… audiophile quality sound, clear mic communications if possible, and able to be ran on consoles probably a phone or something, guitar amp, etc so lower impedance.

I mean you say that, I guess I can see that for some especially in the treble but I fell in love with them… currently my #1 favorite right now.

Ah, well I would say the msr7 is pretty sweet in that regard, very well done for the price and can be run a ok on a phone from my experience. If you wanted more bass though you can go for the ws1100i which trades some detail of the msr7 for a bit warmer sound (also vmoda support).

If you didn’t want something with vmoda support (perhaps a modmic or desktop instead?) there are other things in the range too
