I owned the M40X stock pads and sent them back to amazon 2 days later.
Special pads have a special price and a special location and are especially hard to get if ur not in the US.
Might be good with other pads. With stock pads the sound was not balanced.
Would you say they’re worth it? Or just stick with the CM / AMG options?
Hmm interesting…
that’s fair but the m40x’s treble aren’t peaky like the 361. the 361 is a better headphone but sound sig wise when pad swapped the m40x is difirent and seems to comply closer to what is needed. unless the akg k361 can be pad swapped easily to tome the highs and get the bass up
The pads have little plastic rings in the them so I don’t think so. Easy to remove though, I’m just not so sure about other pads fitting.
I think you mentioned that’s where the 371 comes up, right?
Yeah honestly I’d rather not mod anything for my first pair of headphones.
somewhat I really like the 371 personally. there are a few peaks that you may be sensitive to but personally I find the headphone more pleasant than the 361.
So then, what about between the M40x and the 371?
I like the akg k371 more. th ebuild quality is slightly better much more comfortable stock. more bass . decent mids and good treble response nothing about it really bothers me personally. really good for rock, classical, sound tracks , k pop , j pop specifically. the m40x is just a good old reliable smooth neutral headphone good for music and monitoring not super detailed but enough to be competitive at this price point.
Taking into account what I listen to the most (from most to least) in the next quote:
Do the K371 work great?
I should work fine for all of those genres and be good - great for some of them. depends on your tastes ultimately
I see… You’re really selling them to me, aren’t you? lol jk.
I’ll still look into some audio websites for reviews and sound demos for these and the CM MH571 just to be sure, but yeah I think the K371 could be the ones… I’ll update when I reach my final decision.
Thank you so much!
(Based off sound demos) for the emu, the bass is there, but it feels like it dies out before it reaches your ears. Like you can tel “those drivers are butting out high quality sound” but none of it reaches you and it feels like the energy never fully gets to your ear. I forgot to add, I did hear the cooler master, and they sounded fine. Nothing more nothing less. Just fine. Nothing stood out to me as really good or bad. It alright. Would I take it compared to the meze? Nope.
Thanks for the input. The only thing with the Meze 99s is that their price alone is right at the limit of my budget, so I worry the taxes and import fees may take them beyond of what I can afford. But I still have them into consideration just in case.
Good to know! The k371 are good now (before there was an issue were it was all mid bass and sounded bad) but one thing to watch out for is that the build quality isn’t that great.
Good to know, thanks.
When I had K361’s on in a store, they struck me as much leaner on bass than the M40x’s.
I saw multiple people comment on sound demos and how headphones sound there. Since not even the songs are the same on top of Youtube compression, they are mostly useless.

Thank you everyone!
After watching many reviews and comparisons on YouTube, reading reviews and discussions on both audio website and forums I’ve decided I’ll be going for the AKG K371 as it’s the most compatible with what I’m looking for in my first pair of headphones, also offering me the “best bang for my buck”.
I’ll be othering them from eBay as they are brand new going for $119 instead of $149 on Amazon.
Now, I still have a couple of questions:
1. For an entry level pair of headphones, is higher quality music streaming services such as Tidal, Amazon Music HD or Qobuz worth it?
- If so, which one is the best choice?
2. Is headphone burn-in an actual thing to do?
- If so, how exactly do you do it? Is there a some kind of Spotify playlist for that?**
Thanks in advance.
I’ll update once again when I get them for my impressions!
Hello,
Congratulations on your selection.
Yes, let the headphones play music for about 20-30 hours, taking breaks every now and then.
After 100 hours you won’t hear anything.
As long as you don’t use a dac, it doesn’t matter which provider you go to.
It only gets interesting when you have a Dac, a Tidal or Qubozz account with the use of Audirvana when it comes to music enjoyment. Then everything opens up again. But for now I don’t want to overwhelm you.
Deezer is actually very good as an app in offline mode when you download the playlist, it doesn’t take much memory.
All the others need a little more, Tidal by far the most of all, also because it also provides you with the hi-fi music offline as an example, depending on your subscription.
Amazon actually only increases its range of music.
That it sometimes lacks a bit of detail was at least my impression when I switched to Deezer afterwards.was Deezer suddenly quite different,a bit softer and gentler.
But the statement is purely subjective on my part.
