Hi,
I ordered the Hiby R1 and I have some questions that I can’t readily find online.
- In terms of formatting which should I use? exFat or NTFS? I’ll only be using the card between PC and the R1 so I’m not concerned about wider compatibility. Mainly the best for this device.
- Can I preload to the card on the PC or does it need to be transferred through the R1? I ask because I’m not sure if it needs to add files/folders to the card first? In other words, if the card has the folders/files will the R1 just read them? (I hope this is clear).
My last experience with a DAP was the Sansa Clip+ which created files and folders on the card with a specific music folder.
Any answers would be much appreciated.
Thanks very much. That pretty much answers everything.
That’s good advice. I think formatting and setting up on the R1 first is the way to go. But yea I’d definitely like to transfer through PC for speed. Though not a train wreck if I can’t. I did expect to have to scan the card since my previous experience with DAPs all needed some sort of database update.
Yea, I did find it odd that the manual isn’t on the site, can’t actually find it anywhere. I searched everywhere and even used AI to try and find it and they came up empty. Maybe they’re still working on it.

For anyone looking for the Hiby R1 manual I got this from Hiby support. For what it’s worth because it’s as basic as could be.

Much better manual than what was previously available. Thought’ I would share.
Use exFAT over NTFS for DAPS as NTFS is more for file systems (windows in particular) with lots of functions that is not used in DAPS. exFAT has better support across all OS and will work everywhere you use in it.

Some DAPs require good old FAT32 and may not work on exFAT. I do not recommend installing the Minitool Partition Wizard since the free version adds delayed tasks which, a few days later after installation and periodically thereafter every two weeks (I did not precisely check the time interval), will silently install Microsoft Edge Webview2. The audio on my computer would get messed up every time the tasks ran. Microsoft Edge was removed from Windows 7 due to being way too buggy and security issues. It turns out that the Edge Webview2 component is a handy way to silently install malware. This is why some sites report the MInitool Partition Wizard as containing a method to malware. Also note that Microsoft Edge Webview2 is NOT required for Minitool Partition Wizard to function! Obviously it is simply being used as a not so secret backdoor.
So instead I re-installed the free version of EaseUS Partition Master so that I could format SD cards as FAT32. I forgot that I used to use this program years ago. Its layout and functionality is very similar to Norton Partition Magic. The free version of EaseUS Partition Master is all that it is needed to format SD cards as FAT32 which is all that old and inexpensive DAPs require.
If you want a easy and stable way to format to fat32 (and flash images) i recommend the Raspberry Pi Imager.
