šŸ”¶ Hifiman Edition XS

Very useful information and I am happy that someone actually have a good comparison with power feeding.
I really thought Zen Can is powerful enough and I still hope I am not missing a lot of the potential of the XS. Soon I will be able to test it balanced and I it should be a big improvement. If I see a difference I would imagine how much more I would get with more powerful amp. The thing is that I am not planning to upgrade it in the near future.
Yesterday I continued listening on a higher volume with Xbass activated. And I can say the sound is much more enjoyable for me. With my 770 or M50x I never use it because it starts to feel boomy and the sound gets worse. However on XS it sounds so much better. With Xbass their bass is maybe even better than my closed pairs without the Xbass. For me that’s the signature I am looking for.
Now I can’t wait for my cables. Seems like this is the only upgrade for me in the near future :grinning::grinning:

Some measurements from Resolve

Also includes a comparison with the Ananda, air gap measurement for the ā€œoff head rumbleā€ some people mention here and a little EQ.

I sure hope it doesn’t get like that, we’ve only just got away from those claims :joy:

does the xs really have a smaller soundstage than the ananda? ive read that in multiple reviews yet

Hello guys, I’ve been lurking for a while, but this is my first comment. I’m a total noob in the audio world, so I figured I needed some guidance.

Recently I decided to upgrade my low level audio setup that I’ve used for the last few years, specifically a Sennheiser HD598 paired with a Sound Blaster X7. So, after some research, I decided to try the HD560S and so I did. After a little A/Bing with the 598 I reached the conclusion that I like the 560S more, but I also find it slightly more fatiguing and I didn’t find the increase in quality to be night and day.

So I started craving for more, I needed moar, and after briefly entertaining the thought of buying a HE400se to A/B with the 560, I stumbled upon the Edition XS. I read everything I could find on the internet about it and ended up inevitably jumping on the hype train.

So now I’m really close to pull the trigger, but there’re a few buts. I know that the Sound Blaster X7 is possibly a terrible abomination for any respectable audiophile, but before I upgrade the amp/DAC I really want to upgrade the cans. The question is: will I be able to enjoy these cans with my current setup and really feel a substantial difference compared to the 560S? Ideally I’ll order them in the next few days from Hifiman, but as I live in Italy I don’t know if I’ll get them before the deadline for returning the 560S, so I don’t know if I’ll be able to A/B them.

Also the last thing, the X7 has a toggle in the control app that lets you switch between 32-300 ohms and 600 ohms gain, as I read that EXS is power hungry, would it be beneficial to switch to the 600 ohms mode or would it be downright dangerous and potentially damage the cans and/or the amp?

I’m sorry, it was a very long first comment lol

Absolutely you’ll be able to enjoy the upgrade. I went from 560s to Ananda after finding the 560s bright and boring and it was still amazing despite only having the Hel 2.

Switching on high gain mode won’t cause any damage. I did it with my Hel 2 and my Jot 2 is always on high gain

The ananda is really easy to drive tho, makes senses it’d sound well of a hel or whatever

Thanks, you’re making me want to pull the trigger, I’m about to do it

After searching a bit I found that theoretically the Sound Blaster X7 measured approximately 1200 mW @ 32ohm.
If this info is reliable, how would it compare to the ideal amount of power needed for the XS?

I feel like that’s more than enough power. People on here acting like these are he6’s. Just got my pair btw and they sound really good off of my fiio k9 pro.

Damn, I guess I’ll have to try then. Also the k9 pro is something that I was considering for when I’ll be upgrading the amp/DAC, so it’s good to hear that it works well with the XS.

I thiiink that’s about the same power as the atom and the hel 2

But yeah I’m looking at the specs and they actually should be easier to drive than the 400i 2020(unless I’m stupid) which run perfectly of my liquid spark at like 10 o clock, the power claims might be a bit of a false alarm lol…

Anyway I’m still hopeful people are exaggerating the power needs, I don’t wanna deal with importing a new amp just for these x.x

Yeah, I feel you, getting good amps is not so easy where I live too lol

There’s no reason to worry about the power required to drive the XS. I have the Topping Shenzenadio EX5 and it has no problem at all with these. I’m surprised reading some of the comments here, if you have any decent DAC you won’t have any trouble.

Not only that but these are phenomenal too. I received my order from an AliExpress seller in under a week and was hugely impressed.

more curious if the comments about amp and dac are more involved towards synergy and scaling rather than overall power… You can plug a headphone into a strong amp and get a loud volume… but it doesn’t particularly mean that headphone gets along with that amp/dac, ran into several cases of headphones signatures being destroyed or having the life sucked out of them with bad setup synergy

Suppose I can’t say for certain on this till I get a copy in.

Yes, they are easy to drive, but again, my phone can push them to volume. Does it mean, that there is no reason to buy an amp? Topping A30 can push them on mid gain and it sounds much better than my phone, but again - does it mean i hit the full potential of these headphones? Not even close! These will really show you differences between amps and dacs. Be ready for this, your curiosity will be rewarded.
Now i am pushing them with a integrated class a amp (discrete mosfet transistors, toroidal transformer) from balanced speaker taps with a pcm1974 based dac (class a I/V converters - THS4131 and class a output stage - LME49990).
Yet, i have heard better amps and dacs, just dont have the budget at this moment.

I’ll mention again that listening volume doesn’t mean sufficiently driven. Yes they will get loud enough being driven by just about anything but they will not sound their best.
