Speaker amp adapter just got delivered today, and hot damn do I love these headphones. The Mojo was ok, but this is a different ballgame entirely
Yup, really wants power lol
Rob,I am so happy you told us about the sale and posted it! I would have NEVER known what I was missing otherwise. Thanks again brother! Enjoy the heck out of these!
I’m glad it worked out. My card got flagged for fraud and it took 3 days for it to clear. I was really worried they were going to sell out before I could take advantage of the price. $800 all in is the cost of an LCD2C. A fine headphone, but I’d rather have this any day of the week
Can agree with that lol. The LCD2C has nothing on a properly powered he6 lol (well maybe it has better build but I’m gonna ignore that lol)
Have you messed with the pads at all with the HE6SE by chance?
I’ve tried it with many different type of pads but just tend to stick with the stock focus pads. Although they were very fun with mrspeakers alpha pads
Im potentially looking for something that could make the slight recess in mids and lower treble peak more linear. Havent found anything in my research yet though.
Dekoni does make some hifiman pads, so you could experiment there. Perhaps you could also switch up your amp, as they get more linear with more power imo compared to less

Im going to be running the thx887 which gives about 4w into 50ohms, so im slightly worried lol
Yeah, about that lol, it may be beneficial to get more power. Or look for a different headphone. They work on the 887, but really don’t sound like you paid 700 bucks for them imo. You might be able to find some nice used or vintage speaker amps that put out around over 100 watts at 8 ohms for a good price if you are interested. Otherwise I think the he5se might be a better choice as I think that should run just fine on the 887. You could also get an edition xx or other larger hfm. Really lots of options at this price that I think would outpreform a pretty underpowered he6
If I didn’t have this old Marantz receiver, I don’t know how much I’d like these headphones. At $700 they are still worth it I think, but I’d have been really disappointed if I dropped the full $1800 msrp on them. I have a bunch of tube amps and a couple solid states and portables, and none of them sounded right. The La Figaro tube was probably the best sounding tube, and the Chord Mojo was the best sounding solid state. I used the speaker outs on the Sprout 100 and they did an ok job, but only the Marantz from the 70s makes them sound like something special.
Whatever you do, just don’t blame the headphones and don’t feel like you aren’t getting your money’s worth. The sound is there it will just need to be coaxed out w/ more wattage someday. Keep an eye out for a used amplifier, it doesn’t have to be the “best” of anything just powerful, you will experience/hear the difference in sound quality. Heck, I used a home theater amp to test them and they sounded great. If it wasn’t for the fact that the son-of-a-bitch weighed 100lbs and I wasn’t going to even attempt to drag it up a flight of steps I would have it sitting on my desk now…LOL DOH!
This sale is still on. Guys talk me out of buying these headphones. I got a Onkyo amp that i think could drive these:
Ok then, that isn’t a powerful enough amp to get the most out of them lol
Also I’m just going to assume it’s going to stay like this for the price
Thank you lol. I just watched Zeos review of these and he really wasnt impressed. It looked like he powered them well enough too. He said any of the ZMF headphones are better. Said Stax was better. Said The HE1000’s were better. Even said the HE5 was close to it.
That was the regular HE6 not the HE6SE. I assume SE stands for special edition. Maybe their better?
I’m starting to think you guys are bias or something. Maybe its a older gentleman nostalgia thing. I mean that stuff is great. But i think i’ll bypass these headphones.
I mean I owned an old he6 and really liked it, but I seem to be the only one that has commented on here that has had an older he6. It’s really dependant on preference and what amps you have to power them. I would rather recommend people the he5se or a larger hifiman like the edition xx or Ananda. It’s really something you have to be committed to and like that type of sound. I much prefer these to lower end stax like the l300 and l500, and would rather have these over my Arya, which I sold because I enjoyed the he6se more.
Also I really haven’t told anyone my age on here, but I am under 35
You’ve got to try the ZMF Aeolus Mon. Zeos was raving about them. said they were headphones of the year. Says everyone is talking about how they sound these days
Krell beast get the job done? lol…

Just fine, krell amps are pretty great
But my amp puts out more powaaaa (but at this point I don’t think makes too big of a difference). You really can’t go wrong with a krell
