Hey all,
I am in the market for a nice set of headphones, but I would love some opinions from people who know more than me haha. I am torn between the Sennheiser 820HD VS the Meze empyrean vs something of the same caliber.
Any help would be appreciated!
Thank you,
Dominic Dager

I’m currently considering the HD 820 vs. the Neumann NDH20 for a secondary pair of headphone (computer setup).
I currently own the Audeze LCD-X and I Love them. Neutral, resolving, easily driven, and over all just a pleasure to listen to. I highly recommend them, especially considering they can be had in the Creator Package (excludes Audeze travel case) for $1200.
The LCD-X are Open and I want to add a reference Closed back when I’m on my computer. My listening preferences are neutral to warm. If you don’t have a pair of Koss Porta Pros I highly recommend picking up a pair. IMO they are the best inexpensive pair of headphones available. Not a “reference” headphone, but great sounding.
Good luck with your search.
YOU SAINT! hahaha I was actually looking into the LCD headphone series and the LCD x were my favorite! I might get those ;0; Haha. I do not have the most experience with this so that’s why I am asking this. Would you say in your experience that it’s of the same level as the others listed? I really appreciate your advice boss.

Haha, definitely not a Saint but a pretty good guy (I think). I haven’t actually listened to the HD 820 or Neumann NDH20 so I couldn’t be of help in that regard.
The LCD’s are open so they should have a wider sound stage, and they’re Planar which for me provide such a quick response that anyone who’s listened to my pair comments on the “air” in between the notes. I think that’s a result of more accurate timing due to the speed of the diaphragm. I imagine that the LCD-X are definitely in league with highly regarded headphones of most any price.
I generally comb through several reviews (Love Z’s reviews) and end up blind buying from reputable vendors who have good return policies. Most vendors who carry higher end gear usually have fair return policies and expect people to “audition” gear.
I live in a metropolitan city with a great selection of brick and mortar retailers, but I typically don’t like to visit them because of the “douche” factor associated with high end gear.

I agree on the z reviews Haha I have bought some things out of his excitement for the products haha. I believe that I’ll get the LCD X regardless.
I have no doubt that the 820 HD, the meze, or something similar is going to be great it’s just what would be the best bang for the buck haha.

Best closed back that is similar to the LCD X is the Focal Elegia
Balanced smooth sound with a nice soundstage and big in comfort.
After this for me only the Mr Speakers Ether C Flow gets more comfortable and overall wonderful balanced and quite neutral with perfect soundstage
Both isolate good but Elegia is bit weaker in that point.
HD 820 is weird for me. I am a Sennheiser Fan but it is not my cup of tea
The Empyrean with Cayin N8 on tube mode was a smooth experiance- not my budget but oh so nice

Best bang for the buck? The Empyrean - obviously best warm signature hf. You never need another.
If you buy another it won’t stay anyways
