I can vouch for the th900. With the th610 pads on them they sound amazing with metal and rock.
What did those pads do to the sound that you liked? I have some 900s on the way and have been wondering about pad swapping. I also listen to primarily metal.
It brings the mids up and reduces treble sharpness. The treble can get pretty damn sharp with the stock pads but with the 610 pads it is much more tolerable. The bass also becomes a bit tighter.
