you listen to…as a posed to just enjoying the music?..where does this line end?..money, technology, recording or just the mood you’re in?
Me it’s mood as I don’t have the funds to discover deeper audio bliss…sometimes I grab a set and i’m there, no real complaints just enjoying what I hear…Tin P1’s now
I only go into analytical mode when trying something new, or when something sounds different than what I was expecting to hear. Sometimes I like to imagine the environment the music was recorded in, and sometimes I like to listen for production techniques to further develop my craft.
Interesting question. Years ago when I was into car audio I got into analytical listening big time. As in 100% of the time. After a few years I realized I wasn’t enjoying the music because of it. Had to force myself to stop. Now I think I’ve gotten better about it but we’ll see lol.
There are only two reasons for me to really analyse music:
when a friend of mine sends me a new track they created asking me what i think about it. In which case i especially try to comment on mastering.
i get a new piece of audio equipment and want to determine what i like or dislike about that, although in that case i’m rather analysing the gear, not the music.
only with new equipment in my end and occasionally something will catch me off gqurd with a piece I have been using for a while that I never noticed before then I go to analytical mode and repeat the same part over and over again until I can decipher why something just happened and why I haven’tnoticed it before. and often a lot of switching gear and types. but most of the time my time spent with my gear is op something on open up steam of league of legends and chill. or just lay in bed and put something on and enjoy while browsing forums or reddit. I work 50-60 hour work weeks so decompressing is all I do
I try not to analyze the music but every time i hear something new or different in a piece of equipment i find myself now spending hours re-evaluating and fiddling with my gear to see if I have actually done a good “thing” or bad depending on the sound. I’ve been mixing and matching all sorts of gear and i guess i have to analyze a bit before i settle on a sound signature i enjoy. It’s especially bad with anything that has to do w/tubes.
I just enjoy listening to different music. No analyzing here.
Maybe in testing? It’s kinda close to testing or fine tuning e.g. car audio or home gear.
Trying to find the flaws that are noticed and not noticed (measured).
I mostly enjoy music.
That is until I notiuce one mishap. Just needs one mic getting a little too much volume, one input beeing hit too hard.
From then on, I will relisten the track over and over and over. Then I need to have all the flaws layed out.
My primary goal is to enjoy the music. I agree with those who say they’re mostly analytical with new gear. However, I find that there’s a certain minimum level of sound quality that must be reached before I can really get lost in the music. Even when I’m not trying to be analytical, vocals that don’t sound close enough to a real human voice, overly compressed treble, or bloated and sloppy bass can pull me out of enjoyment mode and put me in analytical mode. But I will add that there are times when analytical listening can also be enjoyable. Such moments happen when I notice a new detail in a familiar track. Then, I enjoy the process of hearing that new detail, making guesses as to what other tracks may have such a detail, and then seeing if said detail is in those other tracks.
