IE 900 tips staying in ear canal when removing — any fixes?

Hi all, I have an issue with my Sennheiser IE 900. It’s not the seal problem discussed earlier in other threads my issue is that the tips don’t grip the nozzle tightly enough. With foam tips especially, but sometimes silicone ones too, when I remove the IEM the tip stays behind in my ear canal.

Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? Grateful for any suggestions.

Depends on the nature of what’s causing them to slip off. A couple possible solutions:

  • Try other tips if the diameter of the tips’ bores is too large for the nozzles on the IE900s.
  • Clean the oustide of the IE900’s nozzle as well as the inside of the foam tips’ bore. The human ear produces oils no matter what, and they can get on the interior of the tips’ bores as well as the outside of the nozzles, causing the tips to slide off more easily. You can use something as simple as a tissue to clean both surfaces, with or without rubbing alcohol as you like. Just wipe off the nozzles and twist the tissue into a ‘thong’ which you can pull through the tip bores, and then just a circular motion to swap the inside of the bores.
  • Alter your technique for removing the IEMs from your ears. When you remove them, use your other hand to pull up and back on the top of your ear to widen your canal to allow the eartip to come out with less contact surface, and if you kinda jostle it around it can also ‘roll’ the tip out a bit which will make it less secure.

Thanks. The most common issue I found online related to these IEMs was not enough seal with the supplied silicone/memory foam tips. I found the way they sit on the nozzle — they just come off too easily regardless of how clean they or the ear canal are. It seems like a major flaw to me. Also, in the memory foam ones there is a thread that you should apparently be using when putting them on, but the thread is so tiny that it doesn’t make any difference in the grip. Not sure if I’m missing something since this is apparently their flagship IEM. Parhaps someone can recommend other tips with slightly tighter bores.

Cursory Googling says that IE900 has a 5mm nozzle. Most Spinfits, Kbear Coffee and KB08 tips, Final Type-E and Dunu S&S & Candy tips have all have pretty tight bores barrels on their tips and should fit a 5mm nozzle with good grip.

There is actually another trick you could use, put a silicone o-ring onto the tips/nozzle so it secures it more. This was popular with the blon bl-03 years ago.
