IEM discussion thread (Part 1)

07m is also not for bassheads. Maybe Lava …

I haven’t heared the OH10 outside of Dan’s demos or most of the following IEMs, but if you love the bright/clear sound and ample bass of the OH10, these might be worth checking out (this is my personal “would love to demo”-list):

  • 7hz timeless (might not be a true upgrade - only one I heared so far here)
  • Moondrop Variations (common critic is the thin mids and Dan didn’t like it - still a lot of people love it)
  • Thieaudio Monarch MK2 (some people love it, some people don’t seem to like it - based on the reviews seems like the biggest gamble on this list to me - potentially incredible or buyers remorse)
  • Unique Melody Mest MK2 (Dan’s highest recommendation and not many people dislike it)
  • Sony IER-Z1R (all testimonies of people I could find who have heared both the MEST and Z1R say the Sony is clearly better)

I own the Timeless, and it is my favorite IEM. It does everything well, this one is just hard to complain about. The bass is well done, but some people don’t like planar timber.

I also recommend the S12, it is just a bit more bass and treble than the Timeless. I think the Timeless has better sounding bass, even if S12 graphs with more. I own both, and I think the extra treble makes the bass less noticeable by comparison, not that it isn’t there.

I have listened to the Thieaudio Monarch MK2. I am not a big fan of EST timber, but many love it. The more common problem is that these are huge, bigger than my concha space, and I couldn’t wear them for longer than a song. I assume the problem is the space needed for all the drivers ( 1DD + 6BA + 2EST ). I had seen them in videos, but fitting them in my ears was not fun. I have friend in town that has a thing for Thieaudio IEMs.

I am curious about UM MEST Mk2, but these and the Monarch are firmly out of my price range.

Timeless and OH10 have nothing in common…

Just to be clear: As I stated before I haven’t listened to the OH10 in person…

But what I take from @tkddans demo and description is that the OH10 has a bass emphasis while at the same time sounding very clear/unveiled/airy/engaging. Both are things I appreciate about the 7hz timeless. It is also the same sound I am looking for and I am lacking with sets like the U12t. Maybe I get the wrong idea from the demo though.

In that sense I would also count the CRA into the same group. I have both the timeless and CRA here to compare and surely they are very different sets, but both do similiar things for me. Even though they are not comparable in terms of bass quantity (CRA clearly ahead), bass quality (Timeless clearly ahead), resolution (Timeless clearly ahead), etc. they give me the same things I am looking for opposed to sooo many other sets that are either utterly disappointing (FD3, U12t, Blessing 2) or not quite there yet (Aria, C12, FH9).

I own oh10 & tried Timeless, i can confirm they aren’t the same. I prefer OH10 alot more than Timeless

From what i read/look around, Softears Volume seems like a nice upgrade from OH10. But it does have slightly less bass.

Im not sure volume is a fit to oh10. To me it. Doesnt feel as bassy as it graphs

Love the timeless so good on so many things. I agree no S 12 to compare. Wondering what’s next on Planar front. I had magnepans, Quad 63 . Audiostatics. Martin Logans and Thigpens EFTs. I owned Sundaras and well not worried at all about planar timbre.

Audio hekii seems very close in low end/bass.

While volume share some similarity in the upper end. And yes, it does have less bass.

That would be awesome!

Do you think the mangird tea is similar to oh10?

No. Both mangirds are way more relaxed. Tea2 is closer to what you want, between the two.

Has anyone heard of Seeaudio Kaguya?

These reviewers just released a video: 이건 뭐... 미쳤어? 대형 스피커 사운드 씨오디오 카구야 (SeeAudio Kaguya) - YouTube. It’s in Korean, so you’ll need to turn on auto-translation if you don’t speak it.

The issue with the OH10 is the way people talk about it, or rather don’t. There is a joke about it being the Bruno of IEMs, but they proceeded to sing about that guy for several minutes. We tend to talk about IEMs by comparing to commonly purchased sets, and anytime the OH10 gets compared it isn’t like anything else. It seems to do things on the graph that you wouldn’t want to, and the people who love it don’t communicate about it well. I don’t think people commonly buy sets that V-shaped either, because it leads to mids that are weak. If we say V-Shaped is “fun”, then the OH10 seems to represent the maximum amount of fun we should ever desire.

The reason that list got made wasn’t unreasonable, something with “bright/clear sound and ample bass” so Timeless definitely qualifies. I don’t think you are claiming that OH10 is missing one of those things. I think what it is missing that Timeless has that OH10 doesn’t is another thing entirely, mids.

I sometimes wonder if people who love V-shaped sets worry they are going to anger the neutral sound audiophile people, or they worry that Crinacle is going to say their favorite IEMs are crap. This is where I will say HBB nailed it, “What you like is good”, and I like my IEMs to have some “fun” baked in most of the time.

@Rikudou_Goku is there anything as V-shaped as the OH10 that you see as a clear upgrade? Softears Volume seems too bright from the reviews. Your target is certainly more V-shaped than most, so I think you are probably the subject matter expert on this.

OH10 is a basshead iem and the bass on it is a lot higher than it graphs compared to other sets.

I havent found any upgrades that shares similarities to it, but as a basshead iem I do prefer the EX800ST taped.

I have never heard the OH10, however, it seems to be right up my alley in terms of the type of signature. I ultimately succumbed to the hype train and bought the Timeless back in September at the height of its unstoppable hype train. Well, I can say that it DOES live up to the hype FOR ME with great low end and a sparkly top end. In a world where the Timeless doesn’t exist, the OH10 would have been the set I went with. Punch in the low, air in the top. We all just vibe with what we like. I really like how @hawaiibadboy classifies Audiofile - a set that represents the music in high fidelity, and sometimes V-Shape sigs playback songs accurately. If you’re listening to Zeppelin, you want Bonham’s drum kick to sound earth-shattering, and that’s probably what Bonham wanted as well. The mids on the Timeless are also fantastic to my ears as well. Especially female vocals. I understand that V sigs are not the most accurate, but it’s the most accurate for ME.

That’s what it’s all about.

Sorry, rant over :upside_down_face:

As someone who love V signature, thank you . Totally agree.

As oh10 owner, i can say with confidence, u did the right choice, picking Timeless over it. Since u appreciate how it handles the mids.

While i choose OH10 despite trying real hard to love Timeless, simply because it’s more V,more bass, better sparkly treble, hence subsequently more of my taste. I also appreciate it’s wide airy soundstage. But all that comes with a huge drawback, the mids suffer. The vocal sound recessed, & far back from the mix.

But even looking back retrospectively, I’m happy with my decision (choosing OH10 over Timeless). I just decided the mids is a price worth paying for the bass & treble.

Of course, different people, different opinions. That’s why this hobby is fun. There’s something for everyone. And we should get the one we personally love the most.
