IEM discussion thread (Part 2)

New toys arrived Tiandirenhe TD19 and BGVP P05.

This is my first Tiandirenhe and probably the last. The channel imbalance is incroyable. The resin build, look and feel is very nice. I also like that you can order the IEMs without a cable. That`s something I like to see from other manufacturers.

It sounds like it looks, very wonky, As if your brain is out of sync.

Tiandirenhe goes straight to my ignore list. Still have the TD15 incoming though.

The P05 is an interesting toy with the interchangeable nozzles and caps. I measured in all variations and as a bonus without a cap and taped air tight.

This is fact based on measurements: If you increase the air flow on the side that’s facing away from the head, bass increases. This is surprising as I thought any increased air flow would decrease the bass energy->see open vs closed back headphones.
Speculation: Widening the vent hole on the head facing side would decrease bass energy.

BGVP P05 Frequency Response Graph

All in all the P05 is a job well done by BGVP. After 2h listening I’d rec this set more for Electronic music than Rock and similar genres. The sound signature/graph is something new to my ears (not another Aria clone) → The DD is made of PU and ceramic which is also a newcomer in my collection. Needless to say I need more listening time to come to a conclusion. What I can say is that they have an enjoyable timbre and tonality I never heard in any other set.

Heard this at CanJam SoCal at their booth, very nice people, more impressed with the Crimson though.

MP145 (All Filters | Foam vs "Balanced’ Silicone Tips)

First attempt at measuring something, so not 100% sure on everything, but is it safe to assume that sibilance I’m hearing in the fricatives is that 8K spike (or if there’s some exaggeration if I missed a step in calibration, seating, etc.) ? Is there a way to bring that down besides EQ (other than the foam tips)?

You should normalise the graphs so it is easier to read.

That 8k peak is a coupler thing but sometimes it is “real”. Personally I had no issues with it using the bass nozzle.

(and no there isnt really anything u can do to cut down 8k besides PEQ.)

Ok, much better. Thanks @Rikudou_Goku .

You can set it to normalize at either 500 or 1000 hz which are the usual spots we normalise at.
800hz also works better sometimes.

They really dialed in that tuning lol but for real, what’s the point of buying two moondrop IEMs. I guess their hybrids have some variation at least

Ha, nice one

Even more sad when you realise its been like this for the last 5 years.

Jesus Christ now that is depressingly stagnant.

Good old 2018.

Back in the day when you had the single DD trio, Kanas Pro, Oxygen and the FDX1 as the most popular single DDs.

I remember when Kanas Pro and Ikko OH1 were my first departure into the rabbit hole of Chi-fi. Feels like a lifetime ago hahaha.

Potentially the golden years? I missed it. I wasn’t active in the hobby then unfortunately. I rejoined the cult when all the hype sets and collabs started to flood the market back in late 2021. Jesus Christ, where has the time gone?

I would argue that now is more of a golden era, as the price and barrier of entry to good sound is as low as it has ever been. There is a lot of copy-paste out there, but the amount of genuinely great gear at all prices and the fact that there is a dearth of “solid but not a killer in the bracket/market” units means that everyone wins except for lazy companies.

I remember back when the IE800 and SE846 were the top tier recommendations lol.

Moondrop doing its best job to keep that barrier standing :joy:

…is that not a really bad comparison that misses the point? Most of those IEMs were Moondrop one-upping themselves by lowering the price and bringing down the overall market segment as a whole.

From the Starfield → Aria (warmer, cheaper Starfield) → Snow Edition (different finish, a bit clearer sounding - that‘s a refresh tbh)

The Chu and Chu 2, with the prior re-defining the 20$ bracket and slaughtering even sets up to 50$ on release.

The Kato replaced the KXXS (and Kanas Pro, which I honestly was not a fan of) and was a step up in technical performance and overall presentation.

So if there is one set you could label as a refresh, it would be the Aria Snow Edition.

Aside, it‘s not like Moondrop have had this style of tuning for their single DDs since yesterday (excluding the Illumination), that‘s always been their house sound for those sets.

I think thats the point he was making though. its consuming itself. It would be one thing if they discontinued the other models in favor of bringing the price down but each model up there is still for sale except the Starfield I believe. who are all of these models for? The Aria 2 just came out that is more expensive than the Chu and Chu 2 so its not lowering the price point for that tuning either.

Fair, I am not entirely sure where the Aria 2 stands. But - I also haven’t heard it yet either, so I will reserve judgement for when I do. I won’t form an opinion on a set unless I got to try it.

At least in the case of Starfield vs Starfield 2, these two sets are very different to one another, with the SF2 being more like a spiritual successor to the SSR with its bright tuning (which I actually very much like).
