Well, some things I like that I would feel confident working with would be the inear prophile 8 or sd5, vision ears ve8, ultimate ears reference monitor or reference remastered. For stuff that I demoed that I think would be good for studio but don’t have enough time with I liked the hidition nt6. I would give a nod to the spearphone sb-7 but I think it’s just too picky to be worthwhile for most people. I can elaborate on these picks if you would like. But really on the lower end side of things the er4xr and er2xr are my main go tos if I needed something
I will look into these, material is basically drone, virtual eurorack, and typical soft synths, so mainly atmospheric and some beats. I use 3rd party plugins inside AUM for limiting, EQ and effects, also Garageband for more traditional tracking but i don’t record anything into it…any rec on closed back full size? I know thats a hard sell here, but i keep coming back to the Shure stuff, 1540/1840
Gotcha. In that case, I would say the inear prophile 8 or the sd5 would be pretty great with it’s very good bass and subbass preformance, and it recreates space in a very easy way to work with, it really helps you design the space. Also very versatile.
The ve8 is a really great ciem pick, it’s really coherent and very good with dynamics and control, it’s just very snappy yet still sounds natural in a way
The uerm or uerr might not be the best fit for you here as imo they preform better with more organic music instruments
So knowing what you do, the er4xr has another main flaw, it’s not very spatially impressive, and if that’s what you mainly work with, I wouldn’t suggest it actually or would suggest something else to go along with it. The er2xr is actually a better pick here over the 4 imo because of it’s improved subbass performance, spatial queues, and slightly larger stage.
For what you are after, I think there are a few options for sure. I actually kinda like the focal elegia tbh, it does a pretty good job for studio work and is easy to drive, it’s spatial recreation for a closed back is pretty impressive, and it’s quick and detailed but still pretty even sounding. The main downsides would most likely be the ok timbre, and the bass that while is present, for some might seem a bit bass light. Also using focal for studio is a slight learning curve since the way they present can be confusing to work with at first (but it’s not an issue when you get used to it).
The lcd xc would actually be a pretty solid choice imo, it would give you solid bass extension and layering, and it’s separation is pretty good, overall even signature that is easy to work with. The main issue might be upper treble refinement but for what you are after I don’t think it would be an issue actually imo, also a slightly recessed midrange but imo that is something that can be adjusted depending on the amp or eq
There are other things I would mention but they are somewhat semi open or open
So in your case I actually might not rec the 1540 mainly because the bass is very nice and organic, but can be sloppy and muddle things up, and for what you are working with that might cause some issues
Was just watching LCD X videos, will check out the closed…ya some of this stuff can be super harsh raw so being surgical with EQ is a big issue for me, also its full frequency so bass drones can get muddy quick so im glad you brought that up…ive followed your thoughts on the elegia and with the deals going around its a great price. Thanks for all these options and your time…
Lots of options for sure lol, for the most part if you get something quality, the more important part is learning what it can do, and noting and working around it’s shortcomings, the most important part is just getting comfortable with what you use lol
exactly, you know how it is, just option overload…Mix translation is super hard for me on mobile, and doing this ipad stuff has it’s own set of issues, but the portability is nice when i wanna step away from the desk. A plus is being able to screen mirror to apple tv while patching with apple pencil while sound goes to the Kali’s, “Wall-E” production from the recliner lol
I can understand that for sure, I really can’t get anything done on the go from what I have found, but that’s just me in general lol
That does sound nice in a way
