IEM/Over Ear for travel/airplane

I travel to and from Europe every six months or so and my flight is usually consistent of one ~nine hour flight with a two hour layover and then another ~three hour flight to my destination, Also a ~three hour bus ride to my town. It is a bit of traveling but i have been looking for a better solution for my sound and isolation needs. There are always the usual suspects but i am wondering what you all would recommend and why.

No real current or past solution of note.

Would it matter much to you what kind of sound you would be getting? What kind of sound do you prefer?
What is your budget?

Sennheiser 280 Pro or 300 Pro come to mind for isolation reasons.

Active Noise Canceling options from various brands, would definetly check reviews for battery time.

The new version of the HD280 Pro is supposed to be really good. Only problem is the giant cord.

well, if you go IEM, you’ll want something that’s noise isolating, like the options from Etymotic. you can go full on ANC with something like the Sony XM3 (IEM). if you go over ear, you’ll want closed back. not sure what is any good for noise isolation…but ANC, you have the Sony XM3 (note, they bug out in the cold) or the Bose 700’s.

I purchased the RAVpower 20,000 mAh battery QC 3.0 USB C PD all that jazz so ill be able to charge all my tech since it is all USB C. I also was looking into something Bluetooth since I’ve seen the receiver/transmitter modules that go directly into the planes headphone jack.

you can make any wired IEM wireless with something like the Earstudio ES100 Mk2 Bluetooth DAC/amp. plug your IEM’s in, pair it with your phone and clip it to your collar and voila!

Sound preference for the type of music would be mid focused/Neutral. Female vocals/Chill Step/Instrumental/Classical/70’s-90’s everything but screaming/hard headbanging and country. I’ll be 30 this year lets put it that way.

Budget - Comfort

For the price I would recommend the BTR5, but it doesn’t have that clip, which is a nice little bonus.

I do have a Q5s currently. I also am leaning more towards an IEM since i have a pair of HD 660s coming in Saturday.

Maybe the Oriolus Finschi would work. They are chill.
Another that would be good are Guideray Gr-i series.

Oh okay that does help.

Hmmm, something that isolates really well, and also is pretty dang neutral is the etymotic er4xr. That being said, you may sacrifice comfort for isolation

The etymotic er4xr are very nice.

They are 240$ on Amazon is that a reasonable price?

Also would replace the cables for something balanced. I have seen this one before.

That’s pretty reasonable for them, I rember seeing them for around 300 sometime (I don’t know when), but I would say they are worth it if you really like a technical signature that is very neutral. I would even feel somewhat comfortable mastering on them if I had to

@M0N do you still feel this? i have a specific use case, i do some sample pack creation on my ipad, using multiple apps and AUM as my mixer. I would prefer a closed back headphone but would also like a “studio” iem to mix and master. Would this be your closest Rec? was looking at the ER4SR specifically.

I would still agree yes, but I would go for the er4xr mainly because I think the sr bass performance while neutral isn’t as satisfactory, as impact is lacking I feel. For work purposes I really like the 4xr, but if there was one complaint it might be organicness as for me it doesn’t give the best representation of timbre and natural attack and decay, it’s a bit forward and slightly unnatural, but still a great tool. I think if you wanted something a bit more organic sounding (still neutral) at the expense of some detail and clarity, the er2xr is also worth a look imo, both are great, I think it just depends on what you want to prioritize and what material you work with

Also there are other options I like as well, albeit in higher price brackets for the most part, also more amp sensitive

@M0N thank you for the detail, what in the higher price range? I have the 58x, 600 and 6xx, Beyer dt770 80 and 250 ohm, amps i can deal with or get, i just want that perfect monitor so i can do everything in the “box” so to speak, all price points welcome

buy a second hand set of Bose NC headphones then use a good IEM underneath…its what i do and it works a treat and no compromises on sound quality.
