I’ve been looking for a pair of headphones with lots of sound stage, and I’ve heard that the HD 800 is the king of with and sound stage, the problem with them are that they are $900 used and the better S model is even more at $1200 used. Are these headphones worth that price? Zeos didn’t seem to like them very much are there good alternatives for a lot less money?
I would say that the hd800s is hard to beat when it comes to wide soundstage, and are worth what they go for. IMO if you can, avoid the hd800 because of the treble issues, but there are mods and you can eq it down.
If you want similar width, but not refined, the hd700 might be something you can score on the used market for around 350 the last time I checked
Isn’t the HD660 the same driver as the HD700 in a much more comfortable package?
Somewhat similar driver design, but much different tuning and housing.
didn’t Z say the HD700’s are the worst headphones he’s heard in his entire life? LoL
I bet he did. Like I said (or should have), they are a pretty flawed headphone, but some like it.
I wouldn’t recommend the HD800 unless you fully intend to use EQ (or mod).
Josh Valour suggested the Beyerdynamic T1 sounded very similar. Can anyone else attest to that?
Not really. Imo they are warmer and don’t have the soundstage that the 800 does imo. Also the 800s is better detail wise too
How much time did you spend with the T1? Prices has been as low as $650 recently, so I was considering it.
I used to own it around the same time I owned the 800s. It is a good headphone, but I wouldn’t say it’s super similar to the hd800s. Still worth it imo because it holds up for sure. The t1 is also less amp picky then the 800s. If you want the type of sound the t1 offers go for it, its pretty great
There’s a part of me that wants to pick one up primarily for gaming purposes and chat, with music being a secondary consideration. I mean, there’s one available locally for under $700 used…
Well I would say they excel for immersive competitive gaming for some (not my preference)
How about the Hifiman stuffs? Sundara? Ananda? I also heard the dt880 600ohms are quite wide?
It depends imo. The sundara would be pretty good for competitive gaming with good imagining and slightly boosted highs, while the Ananda and other larger hifiman might be better for more casual because imo the imaging isn’t as good on the larger hifiman compared to the sundara.
The dt880 600 ohm is pretty great for competitive as well. Good imaging and soundstage with a balanced freq response
That’s mainly why I want to buy the HD800 I’m honestly not that big of a music Listener, I like audio equipment and mostly use it for gaming, I have a surround sound system that I use basically just for my PlayStation 4 because all of my “TV” watching is on you tube.
