Alright so I wanted to actually place a review on this. I got this just recently and had to take about 15 minutes to fully set it up. This is going to be a seriously bad review you’ve been warned.

Price: $300. Competition: Hyperx Orbit / s variation, Steel Series Arctis Pro + Gamedac, Audeze Mobius

Build quality: cheaper thin plastic, good looking rgb and the only redeeming quality of the build, decent enough weight + generic padding nothing special to mention in this regard. All options are littered all the way up the left side ear cup and are confusing. Cable is LONG good for couch gaming and attached to a chat mix device that is quite a bit of ways down, a little too far down.

Microphone: this is the one thing that makes a headset stand out as it makes the HEADSET be a HEADSET instead of a headphone. This is a very cheap rubbery plastic microphone that is not adjustable. Microphone quality: Reverb. Think sitting inside of an aviators headphone using the microphone and you have that strange reverb effect. This is redeemable by the 3.5 aux plug so its compatible with the V moda. This should not be necessary but it is in this case despite costing $300 you have to spend more just to fix this headset due to terrible mic quality.

Software: This is something I was very interested in as tinkering with a gaming headsets software of the higher end is always interesting and it looked good to me at first view. Let me put this quickly… half of this don’t work worth a damn. Equalizer isn’t worth a damn, DTS didn’t seem to work upon choosing it to be on, and the “sphere engine” they have for sound that allows the 3D told me “Coming Soon” upon trying to calibrate with a link to the site where I found nothing to fix the issue so I skipped this. For a $300 I would expect the software you advertised to make this seperate from the other two to actually be available out of the box after you made me download the updates, firmware, and everything in between. Upon even plugging this headset in you have to go into control panels sound and set it all up… it doesn’t properly set itself up upon use like every other gaming headset. Equalizing this headset on an actual equalizer thats not trash causes trouble outside of the bass it just doesn’t respond well unlike its competition.

Sound Quality: Okay, I am going to hit multiple points here due to it being a game headset. This sounds like a $100 headset… in this comparison the hyperx alpha is not only more comfortable but sounds just as good as this. The only thing that would put this headset apart is if that surround sound engine would actually work outside of that this headset isn’t worth $300. It’s competition has great sound with a very good sound stage this came out of the box with a minimal sound stage in competitive gaming and pretty piss poor imaging I had a lot of issues actually pin pointing where sounds were coming from just in general even if they were relatively close to me. whereas hyperx orbit and Arctis I had zero troubles in this regard and they excel at this with actual modes for footsteps and the like. This does have modes for footsteps and the like IN ITS EQUALIZER, that thing that didn’t even work that well.

Final notes: JBL should stick to their speakers and stay out of this Genre. It’s not free real estate and you will be expected to hold up to your competition especially when you tout a new engine that can compete with the others and not even have it available out of the box and make it to where we have to fully set it up cause the pc won’t properly set it up naturally. This is not remotely worth the $300 and I don’t pull my punches in reviews at all when it comes to the gaming genre. In this particular case if you want a headset in this margin… go with its competition… want a general go to headset? get the pc37x or game one. Want a closed back version of the game ones? Go grab the Hyperx Alphas. Want the open back gaming headset thats actually pretty damn good? Go grab either again pc37x or Astro A40s with their mixamp. Even if the sphere effect did work it doesn’t justify the price tag here.
