LCD-2 Classic vs Focal Elex

Hey!

I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to these 2 headphones-or not this hobby is a nightmare I have no idea, and I can’t find anything directly what I’m looking for as a comparison.

I want an upgrade from my HD660s, something with more bass but not enough to hurt. I’ve found both of these for ~$600 used on eBay, and I’m leaning more towards the LCD-2c as it looks a little more exciting.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks!

Definitely go for the Elex’s. LOTS of bass for an open back. I owned the LCD-2 Classic’s and was very underwhelmed. It requires lots of EQ’ing. My Elex’s have been at or near the top of my collection for more than a year and a half. I can’t imagine moving them unless I went for a pair of Clear’s.

Thanks for the advice!
I am a little intimidated by EQing so that’s very helpful.

I’m not trying to confuse you further, but have you considered the HiFiMan Edition XS, too? It has surprising bass punch for a planar-magnetic.

It’s also $500, $200 cheaper than the excellent Elex.

Thanks for the suggestion! And don’t worry about confusing me more haha, I’m already at that point.
I’ve looked at those headphones too, definitely interesting.

I think the EQ factor will be large here. If you went with that Audeze, I’d be prepared to do some EQ.
Sounds like you’ll have a little bit to learn there, but it doesn’t have to be daunting — it could present some additional challenges/limitations depending on how you’d like to use these. I think the tuning of an Elex is a lot better, and I might be inclined to resist EQ’ing the bass regions of that headphone.

Additionally though, what qualities in a headphone are you seeking, what do you listen to and what is your source for them??

Thanks for the advice! Due to some other important factors, I did go with the LCD-2c’s, (mostly shipping rates, return policy, and seller looking more legit).
I’m very interested in tuning, but I’m not super sure where to get started.

I listen to a lot of rap and some hip hop, and I look that headphones have a little kick, not too much bass, and overall pretty clear.

I’ve owned both the LCD2C and the Elex at different times and they’re just very different headphones. The Elex and HD660S are more of an all-rounder than the LCD2C, but the LCD2C gave me way more wow moments. I’m particular, progressive metal and also choral music ate something special on the LCD2C.

I also did own the HD58X at the same time as the Elex and actually preferred the 58X for its slightly thicker sound. The 58X has a very similar tuning to the 660s, so I think you made a good choice going for the LCD2C

Edit - oh also, the LCD2C’s primary weakness is with higher pitched vocals and acoustic instruments, so for rap and such I think you shouldn’t have many problems with the stock tuning. Just make sure you give your ears time to adjust to the unique tuning.
