I actually bought the pro version of that some time ago after seeing the regular version come with Ryzen RAM calculator. I gad tried some other free ones before. But they all couldn’t be ran indefinitely or had some other issues.
If anyone has a Ryzen 3000 processor not being used, now’s the time to sell. Apparently there’s a shortage of them since they cost more than 5000 series new. I listed my 3600X on Reddit for $150 and it sold instantly. They often go for more than 200 on ebay atm
I have a B450 board right now with a bit of a golden sample R5 1600(not the Zen+ AF skew) in it (I can get it to 4.125 stable, though the voltage has to get pushed closer to 1.4V).
I’ve been looking into that along with an upgrade to my RX 570 4GB. Unfortunately, that situation is it’s own little shit show right now.
As of right now, if I only upgraded the CPU, this is what I would have: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/XW7VkX
I’ve proven the 4.125Ghz when I was up in Northern Maine. I give it a better chance at cooling, and it can do it (Prime95 full load for 5 hours, window open with a cheap desk fan on medium blowing cool winter air across the room, ~12 feet away if I recall correctly, in the general direction of the case).
I have considered basically doing a full rebuild. New board, new (better quality) PSU, new CPU/GPU, new CPU cooler, maybe new RAM, and keep the storage.
I’d hand off the older stuff off to my grandfather, who’s trying to build his own system and doesn’t care about looks, just noise level and something that will perform well enough (he insists he doesn’t need more then a GT 1030 level graphics performance). Otherwise, things can be sold or re-used
Lol, I updated the comment to be a bit more detailed and include a PCPP link in case someone wanted to see a bit more of what I’m dealing with right now(with the caviot of the CPU, as that’s if I made the jump to a 5600X from my 1600)
Personally, I’m pretty ‘meh’ about the 5600X at it’s current pricing. It’s by no means a bad CPU, but for 6-cores in 2021 for ~$300? If you can, I’d look at the new 5700G or 5800X instead. Your current board should still be fine for either of those, VRM-wise, with a BIOS update. Though if those are outside of what you want to spend, that’s understandable. But you probably would want to jump up to at least 3200 c16 RAM. There’s honestly nothing wrong with the PSU, unless you were going to get a 3070 or better, then you’d want to upgrade that, or if you just wanted a fully modular unit. Which I’d completely understand. For the cooler though, yeah, that could probably use an upgrade as well.
As I’ve wanted to get more into content creation (editing videos and live streaming, for the former I use Resolve), I’ve considered those options. As for the 5700G, given the reviews, I’m inclined to pass on it for my use.
Agreed, though I’ve more considered 3600 if I can, also considering jumping to 32GB(again, the video editing).
Given it’s the builder unit that didn’t exactly get a steller review when JonnyGuru reviewed it(he didn’t like it), and the non-modular nature are my bigger reasons.
For whatever reasons, I’m more drawn to EVGA and SeaSonic when it comes to PSUs, though I’m not against Corsair.
That’s one that’s been planned, as it runs, keeps things under check at current settings and runs rather quietly, but is probably one of the things holding back my chip.
Really? Everything I’ve seen has shown it as being only single digit percentages behind the 5800X, if not equivalent. What did you see that put you off it?
Nothing wrong with that.
As far as I’m aware, Seasonic is the one that produces most of Corsair’s PSU’s. Or their highly rated ones, at least. EVGA’s are a bit hit or miss. If you get the models that are produced by Superflower, then they are great, but they also have some models that aren’t so good.
It may have simply been the general negative vibe from the videos from the benchmark and graph kings Steve and Steve (GN and Hardware Unboxed). Then again, Tech Jesus at least didn’t exactly care for the 5800x either.
I couldn’t explain why I lean the way I do in that regard I just do. It’s not that I’m not mindful of doing my diligence when looking into a product (I was kinda scraping together whatever I could when I first built it with an r3 1200 and HD 6970), cause I do at least do some digging, but I do tend to look at the company rather then just the product.
That is understandable. And a lot of the reviewers aren’t very fond of the 5800X. Mostly because of how it’s priced. Which I agree with. It’s not particularly good ‘value’ either, but it’s a bit better than the 5600X’s. But right now the only AMD CPUs that are worth their MSRP are the 5900X and 5950X. If you want ‘value’ at the price points below those, then it’s in the 10th Gen Intel parts right now.
There are some things where I’m the same way. And if you had asked me a year ago, before I knew more about PSU’s than I do now, I would have just rec’d Corsair myself. But there are only a handful of PSU manufacturers, and companies like Corsair, EVGA, ASUS, Dell, etc. just purchase from them and slap their touches onto them. Like RGB, the fan in the PSU, integration for software monitoring, things like that.
While I don’t exactly have anything against Intel… I’d kinda rather not just go jumping ship and changing platforms right now.
As for the other components…
Graphics cards is a cluster fuck right now, so I’ve no idea what way I’ll go
CPU coolers kinda depends on if I stick with air or go water. If I stick with air, I’ll probably go with something from Scythe, like the Mugen 5 Rev.B. If I go water, I’ll probably be looking more at a Arctic Liquid Freezer II (probably the 240).
Motherboard, I’d consider the B550 Tomahawk or ROG Strix B550-F Gaming(WiFi).
Power supply… Last one I had my eye on was the Seasonic FOCUS PX-750
RAM there are two things I’ve thought about. Granted, I haven’t watched a lot of the more recent stuff from Buildzoid, but I do remember him recommending the Patriot Viper Steel and Team T-Force XTREEM ARGB (the latter is rather pricey and I’m not exactly all about that RGB life).
Cases. LianLi is the last who has really caught my eye, particularly with the Lancool II Mesh (particularly for actually fucking listening), and the PC-O11 Dynamic (Mini and non-mini).
@BluJay614 the 5700G has a significantly lower L3 cache, so that may effect your performance #'s in the End. according to Passmark, the 5800X can be upwards of 17% better.
on top of that, the 5700G was not meant for workstations.
I know we are in the age of “all hail the chiplet”, but there are some advantages that come from a monolithic design (latency being one of them). Though to be fair if we are talking 5600x or 5800x it is kinda moot since they are a single CCD so cross CCD latency is not an issue.
The only way to go is what is fast enough for your needs at a price you are willing to pay. Which might not be anything right now.
