Since tax season is coming around and I haven’t had an audio purchase for a while I have decided I want something a little pricier than what I have now. I currently have Beyerdynamic Tygr 300r paired with a topping d10 and a liquid spark which I use daily at my PC for music listening and gaming and I love it. Music taste is all over the place and I am not into competitive gaming so no requirements there. Budget is no more than $350 usd preferably under $300 usd. I have been looking at Modhouse argons or Sundaras but I have no idea what I might like more or which one might complement the Tygrs the best. I am open to any and all recommendations.
What would you like to hear differently? What would you change about the Tygrzz?
As I am unfamiliar with most of the sound signatures like warm, V-shaped, analytical etc. I am unable to mentally conjure them so I have a hard time knowing what I would change with the Tygrs. Like I can tell there is a difference between headphones but I can go use my MH751 and within 15 minutes of using them I am adjusted to its sound profile and it takes me actively listening to realize I am not listening to my Tygrs. If anything I would say I probably a warm headphone with more vocal clarity/separation because 60% of my (current) music listening involves harmonies. Alternatively, I would also be inclined for something with more bass as the rest of my current listening is edm.
HD 6XX?
You will get excellent vocal clarity with the famous Sennheiser mids. You will get warmth because the treble rolls off nicely, what many people call the “Sennheiser veil.” It’s manna for my treble-sensitive, tinnitus-ravaged ears.
The bass in the HD 6XX doesn’t punch or slam, at least without EQ. But it’s present. I enjoy listening to EDM with the 6XX.
Now, some negatives. Clamping force can be a bit tight for larger heads. Soundstage is narrow. I think there’s solid detail and separation, but the rolled-off treble prevents these from being detail monsters.
Still, that rolled-off treble is the main reason why the 6XX is the one can in my collection I can listen to for hours without sonic fatigue. There’s absolutely nothing offensive about the sound signature. No bleeding bass, no piercing highs. Very agreeable tonality.
One of the best parts of the 6XX is its ability to scale. It will take almost whatever power and EQ you throw at it without whimpering, from entry-level all the way up to TOTL gear.
