Looking for an upgrade to my HE-4XX

Voices are so much clearer on the XX than the 4XX. The Bass also seems more filling. It honestly sounds like it able to play multiple sounds at once while keeping each one distinctly different whereas on the 4XX they sometimes just kinda melted together. They are also so light that It doesn’t even feel like I am wearing anything.

Tempted to buy the BLON B20’s just to sound what the difference is. Also what do the Dan Clark Aeon from Massdrop sound like compared to the XX?

Also as sad as it is, I actually dig the Xenomorph looking cable the XX comes with.

So the blon will be a fair bit brighter and more narrow, and also more aggressive in the treble from my experience. It won’t have the impact, punch, or layering of the xx, nor will it have the spatial recreation, but if you wanted something different with a brighter signature, it’s not a bad choice

The aeon open x will be more neutral, more compressed, and more average sounding in comparison. Personally not my fave in terms of sound but the build and comfort are very good.

The build on the Aeon is good? Really, the headphone has one contact point to the swivel. Also if the BLON B20’s are more narrow and less relaxed than the XX then I’ll probably just stick with the XX. I also mostly game on my computer so I need that spatial recreation to hear were people are in video games. And aren’t the XX’s basically like a older $3000 hifiman headphone, I’m only asking because buying used for $450 seems like I got the value of a $1000 pair of headphones for just $450.

Not exactly, but it is a pretty good value. It was based on the edition x v2, but even then the edition x v2 is superior technicality wise, but the edition xx is no slouch

The build on the aeon is just awesome, so simple yet so good, and the comfort is really well done. This goes for most mrspeakers headphones

I feel like it would be a cool idea if I just kept posting my raw opinion and feelings as I spend more time with the XX’s so that’s what I am going to do.

That being said, after 3 hours of playing video games I have to say that the spatial recreation of being able to hear what direction people are in in video games is 100 times better than on the 4XX. It is so night and day. That is all for now

I’m very curious about the XX. Hows the treble on it? is the headphone bright at all?

Yeah one thing about these hifiman big planar headphones is the seperation. I was playing a B52’s track the other day “Girl from Ipanema” and on the Auteur it felt a little congested. i switch over to my Arya and bam no problem i could hear everything fine. These are great for separation.

I would say that the headphone can be bright, definitely brighter than the 4XX yet at the same time bring a bit warm. Vocals are very clear and I would say the treble is decent, better than the 4XX again. But it is hard for a planar to do good treble, if you want a lot treble then you need to go with the Aiva I hear. But for the most part it does treble bass and highs very well so far and it’s only on a K3 right now since I haven’t received my K5 yet so I can only imagine everything will get even better when I get it.

I dont think the aiva has that much more treble rather just a lot more forward treble glad you liike them though. and when the k5 comes in I would like to read your impressions of it with both headphones

So I was actually able to talk to someone at Hifiman because I had a question about my headphones and I eventually got to how I bought a used set from them and he said that all the hifiman headphones that they get back from returns are actually re-QC so the chance of getting a defective pair is actually lower if you buy them used from hifiman, however they can come with cosmetic damage as cosmetic damage is not considered essential to the performance of the headphone. Just an interesting find.

I also must say, I was not expecting them to be so big, and like 80% of it is actually driver. They are also super light and comfy, it feels like wearing nothing, the only thing you notice is the pads touching the side of your head, and I only notice that because it’s touching my hair since I have not been able to get a haircut.

The XX can also be very relaxing a soothing, but when the time calls it shows it’s true side of being able to just have massive separation of instruments and also that raw impact without breaking a sweat, Songs that I listened to on the Argons and T60RP’s that would make the driver just give up just doesn’t happen on the XX’s. I do wonder what the difference in sound now is when comparing the LCD-2C vs the Edition XX

Yeah i love that massive driver. They just have the speration and speaker like presentation i love. Nuance and details that i couldnt hear with other headphones. Thats one of the reasons i got the Arya. But its treble is a little too much sometimes. I was wondering what the difference with the XX was.I heard it was warm. But appearently still bright. So i guess it just has a more boosted bass.

An yeah the XX is a much better headphone than the 4XX. I wont reccomend it. I have one myself and ive found it to be a dull headphone. But it is a cheap planar. Theres not many of those. And i havn’t tried it on my RNHP. But if someone wants a cheap planar they’ll probably want a cheap amp. But i’d rather recommend the t50rp.

Yeah its best to get these used from Hifiman. but their sales dont happen that often. Did they say they would honor a warranty since you bough it used?

How’s the soundstage on the XX? The Arya is a really wide soundstage that i dont care for.

The soundstage I would say is smack bang between narrow and wide. You can hear the direction each band member is in but you can’t tell how far away they are. Used from hifiman comes with the full hifiman warranty you get when you buy new. The Arya has a double driver magnet design and the XX does not, meaning in theory the XX isn’t as fast which normally means they are more relaxed since the Arya can be more precise. If you look at massdrops graph you can see they are the same as the XV2 up till 300 then the EQ is different. You can also see on the distortion graph that they are infact the least precise, which honestly can be a good thing.

The FiiO K5 Pro arrived and I must say that it makes highs almost ear piercing. It has less bass I think than the K3 with the bass boost on it turned on. I also don’t understand how the Topping D30 would be better than it when the K5 and the E30 both have the same chip

M0N, I need help again, I am very unimpressed with the K5 and am thinking of returning it. But my question is will the E30 and the Magni 3+ give me more bass than the K5. Or will the E30 and the Spark give me more bass than the K5.

So that’s what I was slightly concerned about with the perhaps a tad brighter. So I would just wait and listen for a few more days with the k5 and see if anything changes. I think for your preferences, the liquid spark + the e30 would reduce the treble a bit, smooth things out, and give a bit warmer thicker sound

So for my use case you would say going with the spark over the Magni 3+?

Yes, mainly as it will give you a warmer sound than the 3+. I think you would also be satisfied with the 3+, but if you want a warmer sound the spark is where it’s at
