TLDR: I want warm sounding and most importantly very comfortable closed backs up to or around 500 euros.
I own several decent pairs of headphones between 100 to 200 euros but I am ready for a substantial upgrade. The problem is that there only seem to be a few options for around the 500 euro mark. I want something warm sounding and most importantly they have to be very comfortable as most of my free time is spent between music and gaming. The headphones I am looking for are primarily music but I may well use them for gaming too, I also think that the DT770s are great for gaming and at their price point are near unbeatable for a closed back. I had to stretch them out over the arms of my chair for a few night and eventually they became very comfortable after the initial hard clamp had gone. I also do not think the treble harsh and I am usually quite treble sensitive. I believe it’s the 250 ohm version that has the particularly harsh terrible peaks which is why I went with he 80 ohm-
I have been researching a lot and it seems that the DT177x go would be a great upgrade for me but I cant get them in Europe unfortunately.Possibly DT1770 but they are apparently less bassy? I was very interested in Shure SRH1540 but well, they do get hated on a lot but for comfort they seem to be hard to beat by most people. I also own HD 598’s and Sony mdr1a’s which are also very comfortable IMO. Meze 99’s seem good but apparently they don’t go round your ears completely if they are even slightly bigger than average and I would much prefer my ear to not hit the sides.
So any suggestions for a bassy, comfortable, light, and low-clamping headphone for long hours of use everyday would be greatly appreciated. The amp have is just a small Fiio EK10 which is fine for my 80 ohm 770s and apparently it would be OK for most headphones up to 150 ohm but I would consider upgrading the amp too if I found the perfect headphone but it needed a better source. I think that’s all the information that is needed, this is my first post here after lurking so please just say if I forgot to mention something and I will make an edit.
I am aware there may be no answer as it seems you have to spend a mlot more to beat the 770’s for my needs but thank you for any advice. Currently looking at MK3 Argons, I am very tempted.
I got mezes and mostly fixed the ear touching with brainwavz oval pads. If you wear glasses it helps with the seal, the stock pads are not that good imo, glasses or not they lose seal too easy.
They are ok for 3-4 hours, I use them for work. More than that and the clamp starts to feel uncomfortable.
Ovals don’t fit in the factory slits, they wrap a bit around the cup, but they stay on just fine.
These did catch my attention but I unfortunately couldn’t find any sellers in EU. I will try again though thank you. Comfort is a big plus on this headphone I have read.
If your looking for a portable capable headphone that sounds great Bluetooth, I have to say the Drop Panda and I think you can get them in the EU.
They also have access to the sound ID app that gives to a series of A/B test to choose from. After about 9 of these A/B choices it creates an eq profile that it saves to the Panda. That should allow you to get the sound to your liking, if not you can tune the parametric eq and then save that to the headphone. Once it’s saved to the headphones that’s treated as the set eq for them. You can’t change it unless you go back to the app and re upload a change.
If you love the 770’s you’ll absolutely love the 1770’s. If you want more bass, throw on some Alpha pads and then use the velour pads when gaming. However, your current amp is not sufficient for Argons or the 1770’s.
The clamp was a bit too hard for me initially on the 770’s but if it is possible to weaken the clamp by stretching the headband like I have done on the 770’s then that would probably be good for me. Are they the same where them all day type comfort the 770’s have? I have been considering getting a better amp also. I actually ordered a pair of Dekoni choice leather pads for my 770’s on Zeos’ recommendation just to see what they are like so I’d have those to try also. Do you have any suggestion for an amp that would sufficiently power the 1770’s for around €200? I would pay more if I needed to but I have seen a fair few decent one’s around that price point but I didn’t want to make a decision before my next headphone.
Also the MK3 Argons I am actually considering as they sound perfect for my uses. Some say they are ridiculously comfortable and others not so.
He says the clamp is a lot and it needs it unfortunately. He also recommends the Argons I am thinking about.
Under rated suggestion DCA Aeon RT Closed would be a top tier suggestion and acompanying headphone to the DT 770. I’d also recommend researching some Dekoni Pad options @Lance it completely changes the DT 770.
Going for the wholistic approach if you were to couple this with a hybrid Xduoo TA 10/20/30 probably an excellent starting point for good. Also love my MK3 Argons. They’re incredible probably the best pick.
I have just ordered the Argons and the ifi Zen DAC Zeos was using with them. Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long I’m so excited now. Thank you for the input. Everyone just confirms that they are awesome headphones.
Zeos was running them fine. I’ll invest in something heavier if I really need to but it seems to be a lot of money to get anything significantly better?
Edit: I might cancel the order for the Zen DAC. Would love suggestions for a good Amp/DAC combo that isn’t too expensive, ideally under 200 Euros but a bit more is OK if it’s worth it.
Before today it said check back on may 31 at 9am EST so I did that today, order placed at 9:04 EST and they were sold out within 2 hours. I suggest ordering on June 7 at 9am EST when they restock next. I new I would have to be quick, I set multiple alarms also. They just disappear.
Thats awesome. you’ll love them amazing dynamics for a planar, vocals and bass are incredible. I’d recommend the Lambskin pads, the proteins are the classic Argon experience though.
Make sure you get them balanced and the running them Balanced from the ifi will be enough. Though more power is always good with the T50rp
