Sounds like some good advice. I’ll be starting with the 58x Maybe if I have no complaints with them I’ll just send the others back immediately so I can be ignorant of the differences
Except I know I could never do that…damn it.

Wow, that’s pretty surprising, I could never do that
Never mind lol
I’ll take a 200 less US made planar magnetic headphone over the french drop units that are getting shoved out the door with no QC any day. My Elex didnt even work out of the box.
Drop did treat me very well during the refund process, but there absolutely have to be compromises for drop to shove things out the door at the price they do. Apparently QC is one of them.
I’m so pleased with my LCD-1 that in the end I’m glad it worked out the way it did.
I’ll also add my Elex creaked and scraped when adjusting and were very floppy. They are way heavier than the LCD1 but that doesnt necessarily mean better quality.
Oh and the cables with the Elex are straight garbage.
YMMV.
Any comparison to 1990 pro if you are familiar with them?
I’m not familiar with those unfortunately. M0N has heard them both. The DT1990 intrigue me for sure, but they’d have to be damn good dynamics to best the LCD1 planar. JMO
Well it looks like I won’t be taking the risk on the Elex because they don’t have the 30 day return like the others. Something would have to actually be wrong with them.
Unless y’all think I could sell them as just opened for $650 or so.
I think you might be able to sell them in the 600-500 buck range easily. You could buy them on eBay new for like 600. But if you feel you wouldn’t want to take that risk, that makes a fair bit of sense, as you don’t really want to lose money or anything
If there was something wrong with the Elex, Massdrop support/engineering group would try to resolve so I don’t think there is a risk with the Elex, if there was a real problem. It just would not be a simple return if you really didn’t like it.
I did decide to go ahead and get them if the rumors for the 11/11 only sales date is true. I imagine I can sell them for more than $600 or at least that same amount to someone in the community if I make it known they were bought to test and then sell.
I may snag the LCD1 off of an Amazon store with easy returns as well, or headphones.com maybe.
Then I’ll have 4 to compare between. I could theoretically throw the 1990 into those comparisons too. I’ll probably end up spending about $100 on all this shipping assuming I return everything, but the goal is to keep one of them, and possibly have a second in mind for the future whether that be “better” or just different.
Oh my poor friend. Down the rabbit hole you have completely fallen. Enjoy!
I really have…easy returns has opened up a dangerous world for me. Lol
At least I know that I have it narrowed down to about 6 headphones out of all the cans in the world. That’s actually not so bad. Three of those are on the way already. ALL from massdrop o.O
Btw does anybody know if the Fiio A3 would NOT power any of these? I don’t really understand how to judge the ohm vs sensetivity equation.
Dt1990
Elex
M570
LCD 1
58x
4xx
So I think the a3 could power the 58x, anddddd possiblity the M570. Others would make noise but it wouldn’t be ideal to say the least
It’s more that they would be able to get loud, but wouldn’t really sound that great imo because the a3 isn’t really the cleanest amp imo
I wouldn’t really worry about the impedance and the sensitivity that much. I would rather you get a higher quality amp and a decent dac
Really just looking for something to stack cleanly in the pocket with my Fiio m6.
A3 is basically the same size so a little velco and Bam.
I’m over the “power anything” thing. I don’t see myself needing anything more than those.
I would just suggest you use the m6’s output, because I would say it would sound better. I would say you could upgrade on the amp and dac front, as you could get something like the now reduced price chord mojo, the fiio q5 or q5s, ifi idsd nano black label
It would power those well?
I have debated switching to the M11 because it is rated for a much higher output. Maybe if I just had that then I wouldn’t need an amp for those cans.
300 dollar difference though. Which is why I was wondering if there was an amp to stack in the pocket for less than that that might even fit in the pocket better than the m11
I think all of those options would power any of the headphones you were considering pretty well
You could switch to a m11, hiby r5, ibasso dx160, or whatever player and not need an amp
