You’re crazy…like a fox!!!
I think the thing that makes the Elex special is the imaging. Every instrument comes at you from a different position on a well recorded song. They may not be your taste in music, but I recommend checking out the following songs to see it in action:
Down by the River-Neil Young
Dramatic Theme-Pink Floyd
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking-Rolling Stones
There are probably better examples for Pink Floyd, but Zeos always mentions Dramatic Theme and I now get why he does. The song was barely on my radar until I started watching his videos. Bubbles and Letter by Yosi Horikawa are more or less staples to try out new headphones with too. They were also not on my radar until I got into this hobby and I kept hearing them mentioned.
That poor credit card lol
I will definitely check those out and I love some pink Floyd.
Really wish I could find the dsd files from the super cd honestly but no luck.
It’ll bounce back after the returns go through
Careful with the easy returns. Don’t abuse it too much otherwise your account may be banned.
Alright guys just got the 58x in the mail, and I’m doing my first impression now.
Also, there’s a bonus tidbit of what I’m hoping is good Karma for me and bad Karma for someone else. More on that in a moment.
Upon Unboxing and first listen and I think this is very important for buying anything. There is no wow factor. There was not a ton of excitement in that process. This includes the first few songs I listened to. The main factors are as follows.
Comparisons: I have the blon 03 IEM and the sound on those is overall more detailed, and possibly balanced better. I don’t mind the frequency response at all on the 58x, although I might call it tin-y or describe it as what some people call grainy on the highs. Really detracts from the experience. Mids are great. Bass is nothing special, but no complaints.
Soundstage: I have heard so many people call these intimate. This is an understatement. That’s not the right word. A better description would be “I don’t know you like that.”
They are a step above my closed backs for sure, but only that one step, and in that step what results is this really strange sense of sound like singers and rappers are…maybe RIGHT behind me. I’m actually laughing as I write this because that’s the best I can describe this. I’m listening to Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly as I type and there he is. Honestly I don’t know him that well and I would appreciate it if he took like four step backs at least.
And as humorous as I find this, I’d call it a dealbreaker for me. I’ll be returning the 58x based on listening to them alone. I don’t really even need to compare to the others. It’s just not what I’m looking for in my sound. The soundstage is basically in my head, and when it’s not it’s so close I find it disturbing.
That being said, massdrop sent me TWO 58xs. I checked and made 100 percent sure, and I only paid for one. Then I checked the packing slips inside and I both received mine and someone else’s. I feel bad for whoever’s order they screwed up, but I also figure that there will have to be some kind of tracking to show that they are not on their way so I imagine the only person out a headphone here is massdrop.
So I’ll be returning one, and possibly selling the other unopened. In conclusion, I don’t like the headphones, but it’s the thought that counts, drop. So thanks.
EDIT: I just wanted to add that I’m very pleased with how my fiio m6 powers these.
How long have you been listening to them? I would suggest spending like a day listening to them and see how you feel. I am in no way saying to keep them or not send them back. But I would suggest spending some more time before you send it back to get a better idea.
Haven’t stopped since they came and I’m still listening to them now. Probably won’t stop until the next one comes tbh. They are still the best sounding headphones that I have without a doubt, but I’m definitely looking for more of an upgrade than this.
Also the fact that they are essentially free makes me feel pretty temped to spend some good time with them.
Uhh so you’re not going to be honest and inform drop of their mistake and send back the extra pair? Wow
You really think I should? I bet it doesn’t make much of a difference for them or the person on the packing slip. Also could get somebody yelled at for a mistake if they figure out who’s fault it is.
Well I would at least ask and acknowledge they made a mistake. They could just let you keep it, or they might want it back. It’s better then them coming after you in the future (worst case)
Yes, I do.
20 char limit
I have continued listening ever since my last post, and I’d say that these sound like a slight upgrade to my momentums with a slightly more open airy feeling being that they are open backs, but ABing them with the Momentum 2.0 I would say that they are only a very minor upgrade to them (Of course the value is through the roof comparatively since the Momentums were over double the price of the 58x, nowhere near as comfortable and sound much more detailed.)
That being said if you DO like a little over pronounced bass, then momentums don’t have a bad take on bass boost.
Not saying anybody should buy momentums. I just have them on hand, and am using them to compare to the 58x since it’s the only other headphone I have. I bet there are more resolving, more comfortable, bass boosted portable closed backs out there.
I too listened to mine right out of the box for about an hour. They were my 1st “HiFi” headphone so I was impressed instantly. Then I followed what I had read about “burn in” and left them playing music all day while I was at work. I have to say, I definitely noticed a difference after they had been playing music for 12 hours and again after another full 12 hours the next day. However like I said, these are the only “HiFi” headphones I have so my opinion is a bit biased.
How do you guys feel about the hifiman xx from massdrop?
Pretty good imo if you are after that type of sound. I don’t think it will be for everybody but it’s pretty enjoyable imo
The current experience with the 58x has me back to searching for anything touted as having a big soundstage
The xx doesn’t necessarily have a super big soundstage, it just has a big presentation. It’s got a kinda like larger then life sound because of the driver size
