Looking for new headphones for semi competitive gaming

Hi everyone!

Recently my HyperX Cloud II died, and I am looking to buy new headphones for gaming and some occasional music. At first, I was going to just buy Cloud Alpha but now I’m not so sure anymore.

I am on a small budget of around 100€ and I live in Europe so I have a more limited market, but after some looking, I found these more popular headphones available to me:

  • Cooler Master MH-752 84 + 10 €
  • HyperX Cloud Alpha 81 + 4 €
  • Sennheiser PC37X 120 + 15 $
  • Beyerdynamic DT 770/990 120 + 6 €
  • AKG K361 93 + 8 €
  • AKG K371 108 + 8 €

So I would love to hear some opinions on which are the best for the price. I am planning on using then on the motherboard since I don’t have the budget for AMP/DAC.

Thank you for your help.

the Cooler Master MH751 or 752 would be a good start. the 752 comes with a USB dongle to simplify connecting.

the real winner is a Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 ohm. however, those are so hard to drive, you need to buy a powerful amp like the Monolith Liquid Spark or Schiit Magni 3+. those are both warm sounding amps, so they will take the edge off their peaky treble. more neutral amps like the JDSL Atom or Magni Heresy will work, but you may find the headphones get fatiguig after a bit. but I digress…this solution is out of budget.

MH752 were my favorite of the bunch, but they just went out of stock on amazon today. So I’m not sure they will come back in time.

752 and PC 37x are both great for the price. The rest are kinda not as good for gaming or need and amp

I’m actually interested in this solution ^

I’ve been looking into getting the Beyerdynamic DT 880 600 ohm and am willing to spend another ~$250 (or more if justifiable) on an appropriate PC setup with a mic. What would you recommend?

hey BB, I can’t comment on the mic, but M0N often suggests a couple options with use of the Liquid Spark for the headphones and a Scarlett Solo for the mic input, since the LS is for headphones only.

Yeah imo a nice pairing, I like the spark because it tames out a bit of the harshness the 880 600 ohm can get, and the scarlett solo is a solid mic interface and would act as the dac.

@M0N - what would you recommend for a quality gaming microphone?

For just gaming or something for streaming? Male or female? What type of sound are you going for in your voice? And is the room properly treated for a mic?

It would be for gaming, honestly I simply want the mic to sound clear enough for communicating over discord/game chat and to be functional with the setup.

I mentioned in a reply to another post that you’ve been active on that I am looking into a DT880 600 OHM, Heresy, and D30 combination however it sounds as if the Liquid Spark and Scarlett Solo may be options I need to consider if adding a mic to the setup?

by their handle, I’d say male…gaming / streaming is likely and room untreated. LoL.

Well, in that case lol, the shure sm48lc is always solid if you wanted something warmer and smoother, if you wanted something clean and clear, the akg d5 is a solid mic imo

Thanks for the recommendations! To summarize…

No Mic Setup:

  • DT880
  • Heresy
  • D30

Mic Setup:

  • DT880
  • Liquid Spark
  • Scarlett Solo
  • Shure SM48lc/AKG D5

Is that all correct?

So for the no mic setup, I would actually say you would want to replace the heresy with the magni 3+ as imo the 3+ is a better pairing than the heresy (both are great tho)

That looks correct for me. The spark and the 3+ are great, with the 3+ being more neutral a tad warm, and the spark being warmer and a bit smoother

Great! Are there any alternatives to the Scarlett Solo that you would recommend?

I might just buy the Alphas then since MH752 and PC37X are not available to me in Europe.

Something like the motu m2, audient id4, audient evo 4 when it comes out
