That makes a lot of sense to me. I kinda figured that to be the case, but one thing I tend to look for is utility and price vs performance. I’m willing to pay a little extra for something that is legitimately better (to a point obviously) so I’m looking for how this 400-500$ investment can continue to work for me for years to come, and if that’s a 2.1 channel setup for a home theater that’s future utility I can get out of it
I plan on getting a decent av receiver and using my btr5 as a dac (so i can bluetooth to it without having to spend extra for built in bluetooth) and literally just Micca everything. rb42 for the front rb42c for center OoO for the rears and someday when i’m able to put in back channels hopfully theyll have something else, otherwise im getting more OoO or the covo-s. My xbox will do as a bluray player and streamer for now.
still thing OoO is a dumb name no mater how good they are for the price
lol I think it’s adorable. But I see your point.
I mean that can be accomplished with your proposed setup imo. That amp and dac stack is a price to performance king and I don’t really think you would really need to or want to upgrade anytime soon at all. The 58x and sennheiser headphones have excellent build and comfort (I have a pair of 600 that are going on like 20 years now lol), and if you like that sound (I think you will) you will be very satisfied with them. Speaker wise, if you get a pair of good bookshelf speakers, a good amp, and a sub down the line I think you would be set until you went for a whole full on home theater
The rb42 is great for the price imo, great for music and movies, very good speaker for the price. @Orishnu if you got a pair of these and a topping pa3 amp, I think you would be set for awhile, as with the miccas at nearfield I would say even you might not really want a sub
My Technics Receiver and turntable and my RadioShack Realistic Bookshelf speakers from the 80’s are still going strong, lol. If you take care of your gear, you’d be surprised how long it will last.
Yeah, I don’t have a ton of vintage gear outside of some studio stuff, but stuff will last if you treat it well. Speakers and amps tend to age very well, and now that headphones have developed, they will last too imo. The only things you may need to upgrade after like 10 years max might be the digital components like a dac
Awesome. I’ll look into those for info but speakers and home theater dreams are at least a year+ away right now. For now a good set of headphones is what I want and need (apartment living - no loud noises)
Yeah, that setup should be very flexible in the future until you really enter something serious (I mean it’s a serious setup already lol, I just mean dropping big bucks on a multichannel HT)
can confirm, my rb42’s got the thump. But i’m using the SMSL SA-98E to power mine
My dad has a pair of speakers which are God knows how old…he’s had them as long as I can remember. They are hooked up to an equally ancient amp and turntable. The speakers might be newer to him…he might have rescued them from the trash at some point
Good speakers will typically stay good speakers, so vintage speakers are still pretty viable too if you want to get into that. Same with amps. I would say away from vintage dacs and headphones though as they are newer technologies and have progressed a large amount in recent years
since your music tastes and game preferences seem all over the place, I think M0n is right you need to start with a neutral sounding headphone and then later decided if you want specialized ones for your different use cases. Or just a rly good neutral. you could also find you like one sound more ten others and go that direction. I started with a modded M40x and I liked them except come to find out treble gives me the cancer. I ended up “settling” on a set of t60rp Argons which I need to get the suede pads for and not the sheep skins on them now smh.
Yeah my tastes are kind of eclectic. I really think this whole thread has helped me understand the beast I am attempting to wrestle with. I’m also pretty excited that the whole setup I’m looking at right now should come to just over 300 which is an easier pill to swallow.
if you want neutral the 58x is your horse, you want treble the 250 ohm dt880 is your pony. If you want something more warm, you got to spend more money then wither of those two.
you can also do it in parts. depending on how easy to drive the headphones are you could get the cans first, then the amp, and finally the dac.
I’m interested in suggestions if you have something in mind. M0N has me pretty sold on the 58x so you might have to really sell it to me lol
Do you think the headphones without an amp and dac would be a significant step up from my Logitechs?
Can I interest you in the wonders of planars…? for a little more you can experience the deep reaching smooth base of a planar both also with a little magic twinkle in the treble and a light, and open airing sound a feel
The 400i is pretty good imo, was going to be something I was going to recommend if he ended up leaning that way for what he seemed to like
