Looking to get my first audio setup

They are very similar to the 58x. The 58x have a touch more treble and bass extension. The 6xx are a touch more even and may have a wider soundstage, but only by a small amount. The 58x are easier to drive. I still think the 58x are a better buy for someone jumping in head first into the hobby. I prefer the 6xx, but they are so similar…

The 660s was a depart from what sennheiser was doing with their 600 series that some really liked and some really dislike. Some hold the 600 and 650 higher than the 660s, where some think the 660 was a great improvement

I hated the 660, but the 650 is my reference point so I’m biased.

The 58x also has better imaging and is less amp picky. I think with a good amp the 650 or 600 preforms the 58x for detail and midrange for sure, but you have to really like the signature, where the 58x is more agreeable imo

Yeah, I still have my 600’s but do have the 58x and the 660s, but I feel that the 58x and 660s are the better all rounder where the 600s are a bit more specialized since I listen to a shit ton of almost everything lol. I think the 600 is a higher tier of headphone on a proper tube amp, but that’s going to enter another price bracket for sure lol

I use my 600s on tubes, which is a whole different money pit.

Tube amps? As I saw in z’s review of the 4xx?

Agreed. I am done with tube headphone amps now lol (or at least I think I am)

Tubes and the 4xx don’t really match lol. You might have seen some in the background, but an otl tube amp and a 4xx will not sound that great

Can I get the clifnotes on tube amps?

He specifically had one hooked to a Bluetooth receiver and a transmitter on his amp

There are many types of tube amps but I will mainly be going over a hybrid design and an otl design. A hybrid tube amp uses tubes on the input stage of the amp and solid state to amplify the headphone. This gives a tad of tube character, but allows you to use it with more power hungry headphones. An output transformer less tube amp uses the tubes to power the headphones (essentially) and it works mainly well with higher impedance headphones and not really lower impedance or power hungry headphones but gives you lots of tube character.

Vacuum tubes typically roll off the treble a tad and soften bass impact, make the music more silky and smooth, and also sometimes give a greater sense of space to music but may take away some impact and detail, compared to the more accurate to recording solid states (talking about amps in your price range).

The reason planars and low impedance headphones tend to not work well on an otl tube amp is because the amps have a high output impedance that’s not made to be used with lower impedance headphones and it ends up messing with the frequency response that can make them sound weird, and tubes are better at delivering voltage, and lower impedance headphones want more current.

I think he was using a hybrid amp (was it the little bear b4 as that’s a hybrid) so that would prob be fine, but the 4xx imo does better on a solid state with lots of power to really get the most out of them

Yeah he def said little bear at some point

That’s what I did lol

Did you get them yet??

No… And I’m the most impatient person I know. The 58x arrive the 30th and the 4xx on the 31.so not much more waiting
