🔷 MassDrop THX AAA 789 - Linear Headphone Amplifier

Yes, you can. Inside the THX 789 the signal at some point is single ended, and then goes back to balanced. For short runs a single ended DAC is going to work fine.

What’s your take on the Phonitor XE? I’ve been eyeing that one for a while now.

Better less fatiguing 789 with more options, and a way better look(dem vu meters be sexy), and gobs of power! No coloration to the music. Honestly it is pretty awesome! I got the XE so I could do easy headphone comparisons for reviews, but if I was more into speakers I would opt for the X. I also skipped getting the DAC as I have the RME ADI-2DAC (which cut down the cost a bit) but I kind of want the DAC now…ah well lol

That’s some great gear you’ve got. I’m really interested in hearing the Phonitor. I’ve heard nothing but great things. Thanks!

Wasn’t there a hint or a leak a while ago that they were planning a combo version of the 789 that would come with its own DAC? Maybe it would make sense to be slow in putting out amp-only 789s so they don’t saturate their prospective market for the combo by the time they release that one.

LE:
Oh, it was about a matching DAC in the same housing, not a combo.

What brackets did you use/make to install the RME under the desk?

I have a bha-1 amp it’s very clean and transparent. Im wondering how much better it is than the 789. I kind of want to buy a 789 and sell the bha-1 and buy a zmf aeolus or verite with the money.

That’s hot! I also am curious how you accomplished that?

Like your setup. I have mine displayed rather than hiddened.

I got my Airist R-2R DAC earlier this week and it matches the enclosure of the THX789 almost identically. Just thinner.

Yeah, saw that in later discussions. It’s probably how Massdrop decided to solve it in the end: not the same enclosure but perfectly stackable and fitting the look.

W t f you’re nuts shp9500 sounds like absolute garbage

I mean, I wouldn’t say garbage, but most definitely not in the same league as the Neumann’s. But everyone’s entitled to their opinions.

I can 3D print brackets to accomplish this pretty easily. Would just need dimensions to make a model.

i need some headphones to match with the 789. any recommendations?

Almost any headphone will be a fine pairing with it. The 789 is a neutral amp; it will add no colorization to the sound.

What’s your budget? What kind of sound do you like? What kind of music do you listen to?

Do you want a tonally balanced headphone? Beyerdynamic dt1990

Do you want a warm headphone with planar bass? Audeze LCD2C

Do you like the Sennheiser sound? Sennheiser HD650

Do you want a soundstage as wide as the ocean? HD 800s or AKG k712 (if you’re on a budget)

I’m new to the scene so I’m not sure what I like to be honest. I wouldn’t say I have a specific genre of music I favor as I’m open to whatever sounds good. I need these headphone to work great for music and gaming. I have no budget.

I would start with the dt1990. It’s the best all-arounder, and, while expensive, won’t break the bank. Beyer is a great company with a fantastic reputation. You really can’t go wrong with those headphones.

If you have no budget- Beyerdynamic DT 770s 80/250 Ohm
It is a closed back headphone with good isolation, so you don’t disturb people at home or in the Metro.
nice comfort, very well build. All parts can be changed.
Good soundstage… nice subbase… mids are well represented and sparkling highs.
