▶ MiniRig 3

Thanks for the update!

I did install the app but pretty quickly decided it was bad and haven’t opened it since. I will have another go at seeing if I can force them to start paired though.

I have been considering a subwoofer as well. Would you say it was a worthwhile investment? I noticed that when you crank the volume, bass is what seems to be sacrificed… so is the sound markedly improved at higher volumes with the woofer?

I would say the bass is improved… is it dramatically improved?.. I would say probably not. But I believe the sub does help keep the overall sound full if that makes sense.

At higher volumes I think I did read somewhere that the Minirigs will begin to sacrifice bass in order to compensate for the higher power demands.

I may add another sub (and even a pair of the Mini 2’s) to my set up to have the “ultimate” Minirigs system.

I might have a sickness, and the only thing that will cure it is more cowbell… lol

To avoid distortion at high volume, make sure they are in high gain mode, use the app eq to reduce the bass a bit (as required to taste) then compensate by positioning near a wall to fill the bass back in.
If you crank the volume in low gain mode the driver breaks up quite badly I found…the above set up cured that for me.

Due to the overwhelming interest in portable bluetooth speaker systems on this forum and my own curiosity (sarcasm ) I went ahead and ordered a pair of the B&O A1 2nd Gen bluetooth speakers to see how they’d compare to the Minirigs.

Listened to them outside on my deck in stereo, as well as nearfield and individually for podcasts and phone calls, etc. After about two weeks they are heading back to Amazon for a refund. For now (at least), the current king of this category - the Minirigs - are safe as the “best in class.”

The sound quality is good (by bluetooth speaker standards) but not any better than the Minirigs. If you prefer listening at low volumes they are nice but if you want to crank them up they just can’t compete. With high and low gain setting options, the Minirigs just offer more. They can do low level nearfield listening well AND will impress your friend’s with room filling sound when set to high gain.

The intriguing Amazon Alexa feature built into the A1’s is kind of a joke. It works, but you have to press the microphone button on the speaker to get it to listen to your voice. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to have to get up and go press a button if I want to use a smart assistant. I can hold my phone in my hand and press a button to use a smart assistant while it’s connected to the Minirig and have a more convenient way to interact with Alexa, but who knows maybe I just wasn’t smart enough to get it to work right. For me, this feature was unimpressive.

Retail price for an A1 2nd Gen at the recent launch was $250. They’re now down a little to $235 ish, but for that kind of money they need to sound better than the Minirig 3 which is priced at $180. They don’t, so back they go to Amazon.

Hi does anyone have any issues with the two mini rigs cutting out audio? It’s like there’s a connection issue and one cuts audio for a few seconds then comes back. I play with Spotify and use an iPhone 7 the MINIRIGs are pretty close too.

I have had this problem occasionally… I suspect it might be due to other bluetooth devices being connected to it and interfering, or if your phone is paired to both speakers. When using stereo mode, it should be paired to one speaker only. Try just forgetting all your pairings and starting over.

My 2cents review for these speakers.
Note: I’m far from a technical expert or audiophile.

The package is kinda simple but I believe has the adequate support and protection for the speakers. No visible damage on my pair of MiniRig Mini 2’s.

Pairing is not that hard if one reads the instructions. Press and hold to turn on, search for speaker in the Bluetooth settings on the device you want to pair with, and that is done. Using the TWS is another thing, but also kinda straight forward, turn both speakers, pair only one, double press the power button and wait… (should have both speakers close).

My observations are that they have some hiccups while on TWS mode, now and then.
Had a bad experience with these while on TWS. One of the speaker, the one not paired, started making a loud high freq. sound. Quickly turned the speaker off in hope to protect it from damage. From that moment on, the speaker that was paired with my smartphone simply didn’t play sound via Bluetooth. Tested it on a Windows PC with the 3.5mm cable and it worked. The way I solved this was on my smartphone, under the Bluetooth settings, I turned of the “HD audio: Qualcomm aptX audio” and it worked. After that I turned on that option again and it still works…

I’m guessing some weird stuff is happening with the software part of these speakers.

Even so…enjoying the sound and hope they will survive a couple of years.

Thanks for reading and stay safe.

Update: the hissing sound still persists… stopping the music and resuming seems to fix it. But this is not normal and I’ll report this asap.

Thank you for your input :+1: and welcome to HFGF

There is a new firmware update available for the MINIRIG 3’s that I just discovered today when I opened the app (with one of the 3’s connected to my phone). Not sure how long it’s been out, but improving wireless stereo pairing was one of the features of the update. I went ahead and updated both my 3’s.

Also took delivery of two Mini 2’s last week direct from the UK and have listened to them just once via aux cable connection. I’m waiting for a second Sub 3 to be delivered which will complete a 2.2.2 system. I’m going all wired with a HiBy R3 Pro Saber as the source, linked via aux cable to the MINIRIG cable linked 2.2.2 chain. More to come on that later…

AN EARWIG GOT HIMSELF STUCK IN THE TOP OF MY MINIRIG 3 !

while this provides the brilliant comedic name of a miniwig, the poor little fucker is too big to get back out through the front mesh.

anyone got experience opening them? is it literally a case of allen keys > cage comes off > miniwig out ?

i’ve done the same & works a treat

Could try that.

Maybe send them an email describing your problem.

Just don’t feed him while he’s in there…the skinny fucker get out easy

motherfucker already ate something. i discovered him stuck at the hip trying to escape from my tunes this morning

guess i’ll just have to starve him

:+1:

I designed a stand to direct a Minirig 3 forward. It’s small enough to fit in the case. I sell them on Etsy if anyone would like one or I could design something custom.

Resurrecting an old thread to say that these speakers, or the set that I bought at least, are very poor quality. I think I got a faulty pair of minirig 3s – i.e., won’t play audio through cables from a source reliably, won’t pair in stereo mode when cabled, and literally blew out my laptop’s soundcard.

The soundcard is obviously the worst part (well, the worst part was when support lied and assured me that it was impossible for this to happen, and then backtracked when I told them I’d consulted some electrical engineers who said this absolutely could happen). Not interested in paying 25% import fees to send them to England and re-import them, so it’s either sue them for the damaged laptop and get a refund on the speakers (also not too interested in going through that) or just eat the cost.

Obviously, this is not the case with the majority of Minirig speakers, but it happened with mine, and support didn’t even do so much as offer a refund, let alone a replacement soundcard, and lied to me directly about the capability for the speaker to damage electronics by sending voltage out of the 2-way port. I sent them a detailed message indicating what I’d done to troubleshoot, including a factory reset, and their only suggestion was to literally follow the steps I’d already said I’d followed. Shady company and a dangerous product IMO, although the battery life etc. on working speakers is impressive.

Fair warning!

I have no experience with these, ut thanks for sharing. It’s always good to know both sides, pros and cons, of any product. Having gear/products not work as they should always sucks, but having them damage your computer is rough for sure. I wish I had something better to say than “That sucks and I’m sorry you have to deal with it,” but that really does suck and I am genuinely sorry you have to deal with it.

Also, welcome to HFG! I hope you stick around and enjoy it here.
