MMX300 gen 2 cable

Hi all,

I recently got the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 v.2 (600 Ohms) and was wondering whether it is possible to get a 3.5mm TRRRS (1/8") plug to a 4.4mm pentaconn cable to use the balanced output of my Ifi Zen DAC/Amp.
Or does plugging it into a balanced source not make any sense?

Kind regards,
Hatsikki

Last I checked that headphone is a single ended 2 or 3 pole connection, it is not capable of being balanced. Using a balanced cabling to the headphone could do some damage. I could be wrong as the cabling might be different from 32 ohm vs the 600 ohm though. Unless it’s a 4 pole single ended, 4 pin mini xlr, or duel cable connection you cannot run balance

Thanks for the information Falenkor.

I’ll not try it then to prevent causing any damage
The iFi Zen is actually perfectly able to produce sounds on it through the single ended output.

Since it’s 600 ohm, it’s almost guaranteed struggling. My own ifi zen dac can barily muster enough power for the other 600 ohm beyers when not balanced. Would suggest an amp upgrade if you plan to stick with 600 ohm headphones. You can just grab a entry level unit like a liquid spark, atom, magni, heresy, etc in the $100 range(buy them used so you can snag one around $60-$70) and you should be fine with power to spare and use the Ifi Zen Dac as your Dac while keeping the x-bass option.

Glad to help.

The mmx 300 gen 2 (and the first gen) is 32 ohms and is pretty easy to drive compared to a 600 ohm beyer

Regarding the cable question I agree with @Falenkor you cannot use the balanced output unless you took apart and modded the headphones to recable to balanced, you can’t use an adapter or anything like that

The Manufactur version is also available in 600 Ohm  which I decided to pick over the 32 Ohm as I use it on my PC only and have Amps to go with it.

@Falenkor thanks for the additional info. I do have an Magni 3+ as well. But currently not hooked up to my PC that’s why I was interested

Ah the custom option (wish we had that as an option in the us), then I would say that perhaps it would be worthwhile to go with another external amp, the magni 3+ you have works nicely

Hello,
Should actually be possible.
Usually the drivers have a normal plus and minus sign.
So you have to solder them to the connector.
The 4 pin Xlr for example has a pin assignment where you have to solder the plus and minus cable on the right side.
It will be similar with the 3 pin xlr, at the end you probably have to connect both minus cables with each other and solder them to the minus pole of the connector.
With the pentacron connector the ground is probably connected separately for the left and right side.

I can’t say if 600 ohm is the same as 32 ohm at the driver, I guess it’s the same.
But at the latest when you open it and take a look inside you see it and know if it is possible or not.

If you should do something like this yourself or give it to a dealer to have it done is your decision.
It is important when you do it yourself and never put on the headphones during the first use.
Just plug in the headphones as normal, turn down the volume and put the headphones on their side.
Turn on the device and wait the first few minutes and see if everything is normal.
Only then take the headphones in your hand.

And the second most important thing is that you don’t cause a short circuit when soldering the cable, the driver or the plug, you have to be sure about that.
Otherwise the driver will go up in smoke or your Dac will be damaged.
