Modded Fostex T50RP MK3, in search of bass

image

This is my current setup and I really like it because it’s incredible for gaming and very good for the broad music style I usually consume but they offer very little bass and I start missing it a lot.

I thought about adding a subwoofer so I can even feel it with my body but I don’t know how to do that and I’m scared about getting hit in the nuts like when I bought my AMP and the price went from $99 to 157,09€ because of customs, delievery and taxes in Germany.

I have a budget of 300€, absolute maximum would be 400€.

Strap some of these to your body.

Do those things also improve the bass I hear?

Can you further describe “very little bass”? I had Dekoni Blue with those pads and they were quite bassy, and I’m a basshead. Is there subbass missing?

Yes the subbass is missing, when I compare them to my Bose QC35 they fall completely behind.

Ok, gotcha. The T50 is very pad sensitive. A pad swap may help you out. Can you get angled hybrid pads where you are? Those will bring out the bass even more. If that doesn’t work we may need to talk about new headphones.

Like those?

Yes. Those are the type of thing I’m talking about. Make sure they fit.

Looked up the compatibility and will buy them rn, I’ll reply when I got them tested

Meze 99 Noir with the Dekoni Elites might be for you. Great detail and funk imo.

I have the same headphones with the same earpads (actually on my head right now).
There should be enough base.

Do you have an example or two of songs lacking bass?

So here’s headphonesty’s guide on modding these:

If the graph they’ve got about using different pads holds up, it looks like even with pleather you can get a roll-off about -5dB from 200Hz to 20Hz, so that’s a start for sub-bass especially over porous 1540 pads.

The article mentions a couple extra bass-adding tricks altering the airflow / resonance inside the cups, if there’s room for electrical tape and cotton wool in the budget.

Tons of clay on the cup all the way to the edges for bass you shouldn’t be able to see any black plastic unless its the rear port. Lots of cotton to get that clean sound after you’ve got tons of bass from the clay. block the rear port 95% with a thicc felt on the inside.

Nothing in front of the driver. This acheives huge bass and soundstage. Block most air coming to the front of the driver with a thicc felt.

ZMF oval Lambskin pads for added soundstage and imaging. This will achieve the openess without the boxy boominess.

You can also do wave guide in front of the driver for added speed and cleaner bass. Depends what you want.

If you want more air go for a suede pad. this will drop soundstage a bit even out your treble and I find the imaging is really elevated. Depends on your T50 goal.
