Cap upgrade and new pot are a given. Cap upgrade just because itā€™s easy and a no-brainer, pot because itā€™s necessary.

If the gain issue is really that bad as people say, Iā€™ll just return the thing and see what else they come out with :man_shrugging:

TBH after a few weeks of heavy use Iā€™ve learned how to handle the the odd gain and pot issue. I just subconciously adjust for it and it doesnā€™t bother me at all anymore.

As per someoneā€™s suggestion here Iā€™ve simply left the LP at the 1:30 mark and just use the preamp volume on my DAC.

not really I used mine for a long time with no volume control in front of it, you just move the dial a smaller amount.
However some people seem to have linearity issues in the Pot (mine doesnā€™t have the issue) , and I can see the combination being annoying.

I have a passive pre-amp in front of mine now, but that was just so I could get remote volume control on all my amps.

There seems to be some variance in the early models perhaps. In mine, hardly noticeable unless youā€™re looking for it.

Iā€™m pretty deadset on finding a good pot solution. Iā€™ve seen the pot swap done on head-fi (new hole for shaft, redoing the entire faceplate) and itā€™s not elegant enough (as a solution, not cosmetically) for me.

PM me if youā€™re looking for good pot. lol

Looks like someone at Monoprice goofed. The price is at $399 now, still a great deal btw. It reminds me of that quick Focal Clear Professional sale at Adoroma a few months back, wasnā€™t it like $899 or something for an hour or two?

Lol. @Robert_Q let it slip to this forum that the LP was on a stupid sale and the HFGF descended upon Monopriceā€™s web server and crashed the party!

Iā€™m glad some people in the community were able to snatch them up (back up to 399 now smh). I was on the fence and would rather not spend more money, but now itā€™s less enticing haha

Thatā€™s because @Robert_Q is a gentleman and a scholar. I wonder how many they sold lol.

B/w those who posted in WDYBT and PMs from others I estimate at least 8 just from this forum. Would not shock me if monoprice saw them flying off the shelf and said MOAR MONEY.

For those that missed out, maybe theyā€™ll do it again for Black Friday or Cyber Monday :man_shrugging:

I honestly just got lucky when I looked at the page. Was looking around at balanced amps that I remembered having equal or more power than the 789. But Iā€™ll take credit for the service I provided, accidental or not lol

For anyone who have a desire to void their warranty, here are some quick notes.

Removal only required a Torx 10 tool, and taking out 16 screws.

5 screws on the bottom that attach to the pcb.

6 screws (3 at each side) on the back.
1 rca and 4 xlr screws.

You can then push the unit out the front and gently slide it out.

As far as capacitors go, itā€™s probably posted elsewhere, but Iā€™m confirming what I see.

Havenā€™t seen anyone swapping that cap. Have you done the mod(s) yet?

Yeah thatā€™s why I included the asterisk as the head-fi thread didnā€™t specify that needed replacing.

No I havenā€™t done anything yet. Iā€™m still debating what I want to do with it. I had originally planned some Audio Note Kasei caps, but after using it in the Crack, Iā€™m not sure if I want to go that direction.

The Elna Silmic II seems promising as I know Burson uses those caps in their amps, and I did like that their sound signature.

But Iā€™m planning to listen to the LP more and see which direction I want to go.

Thatā€™s the cap that everyone is using so itā€™s a known quantity. Iā€™ll likely go that route. Waiting on my LP to arrive any day now and after some initial listening time Iā€™ll open it up and mod it. Still looking for a suitable pot that doesnā€™t require major changes to the faceplateā€¦

Iā€™d be curious to follow your process, certainly love to see it. Itā€™s something that I have the skill to do and now with the holidays the time to do. Having someone here would be a hoot to go through the process and share notes etc. Itā€™s probably minimal gains but why not.
