šŸ”· Monolith Liquid Platinum

I sold my lcd-3 pre fazor before I had the chance to listen to it on the mlp but I think it’d be a pretty sweet pairing as well (especially with smoother tubes) based on what I’ve heard from both separately. Those are the only two Audeze’s I’ve heard… so far :eyes:

I was wondering if that would be a good combo because I like a warmer signature - the hexv2’s sound superb to me and I would like to try another big planar.

2pf and 3pf would be pretty easy recommendations for you then. Both are fantastic however they do have different characteristics.

Just a quick follow up on the Capacitor mod tht I posted about a few posts up…

So I listened to the MLP for a solid 3 hours this morning, listening critically…there is absolutely a difference with the elna silmic II caps. The most noticeable differences are added clarity and extension in the treble, more linear mid range, and an improvement in soundstage width…

Unfortunately, I didn’t notice until listening critically today that some of the bass quantity has been lowered and some of the texture as well…

I read every single page of the MLP thread on Head-Fi, determined to see if anybody else experienced this…

Low and behold, one guy suggested replacing the cap closest to the balanced output from the Elna Silmic II to a Nichicon UKZ or Nichicon Gold cap of the same value. Well, I have a shoe box full of Nichicon Gold caps. So I did that around 10 am this morning and let them burn-in…

Just listened now and the bass quantity and texture did return, while maintaining the rest of the improvements of the Elna Silmic II caps. It is literally perfect now. So I highly recommend that slight change to the modification if anybody is interested in doing the cap mod.

Yeah I did the reading getting the same caps with the exception of the cap closest to the balanced output. That’s why I asked you the other day. Heard the same thing over on Head-Fi.

Should have mine completed by tomorrow. Looking forward to the weekend’s listening. Hoping I have the same results as you!

It’s funny but I thought that guy was full of shit…not so much, lol.

Good luck with your mods. :slightly_smiling_face:

Could anyone do a quick and dirty comparison of this to a Drop CTH for me? I ask, because I just picked up a cheap used CTH to try the tube / hybrid thing out, and I am digging it. I’ve had my eye on the MLP for a bit, and now I am considering a bit more. Any impressions would be appreciated. The main headphones I currently have to use with it are LCD2 PF and the Senn 560s. It will be fed by a Liquid Spark DAC. Thanks.

Listening time of about 4 hours so far after the upgrade is that there is a little more sound stage, definitely more ā€œairā€ and an overall sense of improved balance between the bass, mids and highs with the top end being the most noticeable. It’s not a night and day difference but enough that it’s clearly tangible, no guessing or placebo involved. There is more immediacy and speed in the low range, but the low end of the LP wasn’t lacking in the first place the additional speed just tightened it up. The low end BTW took a little longer to develop.

Definitely a worthwhile mod if you’ve got a LP laying around. For $30 bucks worth of parts and an hour of labor it does raise the performance floor of this thing.

My favorite combo is LCD2pf and MLP… Magical to me for sure…

Anyone have the Liquid Platinum and the Topping A90 amp? I have both and it seems to me the LP slightly edges it out in my preference. I know the LP is a tube amp and the A90 is solid state. But the LP is a very dry amp and it just sounds better to me. I mean it is a much higher price point than the A90

I don’t have an A90. I’ll tag @M0N so he can comment when he gets a moment. I agree that the MLP is a dry amp, though. The tubes tune its sound more than they deternine it. The price of the MLP bounces all over, though. It’s back up to its original msrp of $799 as of 11 Dec, 2020, but was $293 for a morning in mid-Nov, $399 the rest of November and earlier December, and $480-520 pretty much the rest of 2020. I’m sure it will come back down soon. IMO that means it should be considered as basically the same price point as A90. Either way, MLP is a great sounding amp and my current favorite…until I can move up price tiers anyway.

I would agree in terms of price that the liquid plat can basically be had for similar if not lower price than the a90 fairly often now, and I would also agree that I think the plat is the more capable amplifier when you compare the a90 to it. Regarding the tubes, you can get a bit sweeter sound to the liquid plat with different tubes, but it wont be drastic as @WaveTheory notes

Also the liquid plat is a hybrid amp, not a tube amp, it’s tubes are only on the input stage and not actually driving the headphone, so it ends up still being a pretty fair comparison imo

Have you gone down the tube-rolling rabbit hole yet or are you running the stock tubes?

Man i have bought like 7 different pairs of tubes for the LP. I feel like it leans towards bright like a Magni 3. I keep trying to darken it but damned if i can find anything. i made it even brighter with some chinese tubes. but dark evades me. I got a pair of Sylvania in it but its not made much of a change to me. i dont get it

 Did you find the stock Electro-Harmonix tubes bright? Those are warm, smooth, and relaxed to my ear. Some tubes - Genalex Gold Lions come to mind immediately - definitely get bright to the point of glare on many headphones. I’m just a touch treble sensitive and have found Amperex PQ Gold Pin 6922/E88CC to suit my ears best so far, but I got really lucky finding those as they are getting quite scarce. I have a pair of Tesla-branded-Siemens-made coming in soon to try too.

I heard the Siemens are more neutral. I got some Russian reflector tubes coming. hoping that will help to darken it. Anyone got any recommendations? what about Telefunken or Sofia?

To me the siemens are more neutral but they are also a bit warmer and full bodied leaning, but still reasonably neutral, I have the 6922 a frame and it works really well imo

Whats a 6922 a frame?

Siemens 6922 a frame tubes
