Oh dude that is going on as well but less common and maybe not to that extreme. its all just a situation
I have been running the Genalex 6922s (Gold Lion) for about 10 days now and Iāve lost track of runtime hours but I estimate @ 120 hrs. They are sounding much better than they did at first but, I am not yet satisfied that they have fully broken in. I am going to give them a solid workout tonight, it is after-all, āFunky Fridayā and I do like to get my funk on and blow up the listening to tonight topic,
Even though the Gold Lions may not be fully āripeā, I am already sensing that they are not as warm and smooth as the stock Electro Harmonix 6922 and present as a little brighter over all. Surprisingly more so on the hexv2 vs the Elegia (I would have guessed the opposite). I do feel that the staging presentation is wider and a touch more mid-forward, to me anyway, and has leaned it out over-all. Itās just not as āthickā, if that is a descriptor that is accepted.
I am not disappointed per-say, and if I had not heard the Electro Harmonics first I honestly probably would not have thought anything about it. But, since I have, I do prefer their thicker, rich, warm sound.
I am tempted to pull the Gold Lions and swap in the Siemens 7308ās but, that would not be giving the Gold Lions a fair shake. So, I will let them roll on for another couple weeks before doing that.
Who knows, maybe they just need a little more doseān from the funk ray - Time will tell.
Fully agree with you on this.
Hello,
I had a similar impression with the Schiit Vali 2.
Then I got the EH 6922 Gold, which was a little better than the normal Eh, a little more subtle.
I found the Genalex a little too bright for my taste, but I didnāt like something about it.
I then tried this one
It was similar to the Eh 6922 Gold, but a bit fatter in all areas.
I stayed with this one in the end.
I thought the Genalex would be good if the headphones were a little darker.
But if itās brighter, the Eh 6922 gold or the Tad are more suitable.
It makes it less shrill and warmer.
The EH 6CG7 had a great voice reproduction, brings you closer to the music.
But makes the stage a little smaller. I didnāt think it was too shrill, but I felt it was missing something.
As neither a baby boomer or millenial Iām just hoping shit gets better and problems not get perpetuated
āThose who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable." JFK in a speech, 1962.
I think the unsustainable wealth gap is end stage capitalism eating itself. lol
But letās get back to talking about our beloved Liquid Platinum.
on that note I am getting one! I also got some soldering gear so I can reterminate my cables to balanced
Iām in the process of swapping caps and the factory solder appears to be really high temp. I have my Hakko up to 899 degrees (max) and itās baaaaarely doing anything. What did the rest of you do?
Not that problem. Is anything acting like a heatsink or is your rig busted? Usual, Iām typically around 650 F
I donāt believe there is an issue with the rig - it goes through my normal solder like itās not even there. As for heatsinking, I canāt imagine what would act that way - itās just a circuit board
What for caps you use it and do it your self?
Replacing all 7 caps with Audio Note. DIY. Apparently the circuit board has a pretty thick ground-plate so thatās probably acting as a heatsink. Not much to do but keep at it.
Sounds interesting, what is the goal when you have exchanged all 7 caps for better ones?
If you do it, show photos of it .
The goal is for it to sound better. Will it? I dunno yet lol.
Finished recapping. All caps replaced with Audio Note. Two notes:
#1 The smaller factory caps have 0.5mm lead diameter and so do the holes. The Audio Note caps have 0.8mm diameter leads. There are two ways to get them in the circuitboard holes. The stupid way: drill out the holes. Doing this risks destroying the solder/contact pads at which point you can throw your amp away. The smarter way: take Dremel and file away some of the diameter off the leads. Pics below.
#2 The Audio Note caps are rated at 85 degrees. Several (I donāt remember which ones) of the factory caps are rated at 105 degrees. I donāt know if any area of the amp actually gets close to 85 let alone 105 degrees but to be safe and prolong the lifespan of the caps I did two things. Got socket savers to lift the tubes out of the chassis. Arranged the caps on the board so they are as far as is feasible away from heat generating devices/areas. Itās why they appear to be at random angles on the board.
Iāll update in a week or so if I hear any differences from stock.
Itās pretty remarkable how much the temperature drops in the amp when you raise the tubes up. Good job. Give it a few days before you pass judgement on the sound. I used Elna Silmic ii caps so it may not be apples to apples.
Word of caution though, if the bass is off, take a look at replacing the cap right by the balanced out connector to a Nichicon Gold.
Would love to know what you think in the end.
Good work,
Um, the 3rd way would have been to loop only the tips of the capacitor.
Which capacitors did you use exactly?
I had a look at Audio note and there were quite a few.
Hope for you that the conversion satisfies you .
Honestly the chassis doesnāt feel any cooler than before. But my hand is not a calibrated thermometer soā¦
Yeah for sure. Iāll let the caps bake for ~50 hours before thinking about it.
Not sure what you mean. Can you explain pls?
Some feedback on the cap upgrade. The first 30 hours wereā¦painful to be honest. I was like wtf happened to my amp??? Right at 30 hours it started changing dramatically. Now at ~36 hours, the amp is more resolving, thereās more air, spaciousness is better, background is darker, detail is amazing.
Tonally itās still a bit wonky but getting better. Once tonality settles down Iāll see what I think of it but so far the changes are pretty dramatic (in a good way).
Oh, another thing - this is kind of strange and I assume it has to do with the change in spaciousness. From time to time I hear things that make me think the sounds are coming from my desktop speakers. The first few times I took the cans off to check if my speakers are on as well. I think all these changes are due to a blacker background - just easier to hear a lot of micro stuff that wasnāt there before.
All this is coming from a guy that is generally skeptical of big changes.
