I really have 2 complaints about MLP: the somewhat cheap/generic pot, and this power supply. The power supply works fine, it’s just suprisingly dinky for an originally $799 amp. I get that Monoprice saved some cost with the cheap potentiometer and power supply. But then they made it worse by making the power supply a weird combo of 36V-1.4A. When I first opened the amp I was like “there’s no way that’s enough power!” It is. But I don’t have to like that it is
Are you trying to push me into a v280 ??? LOL
Also, no.
even though its back at full price now is it wrong for me to have the mindset that this map is more realistically in the $400 category due to how often on sale the thing is?
Roller coaster pricing. In a week or 2 it’ll probably be back down in price. I consider as being in the $400-600 tier.
Those Bugle Boy 6DJ8’s came from the '60s. From the 1960’s, the large halo getters are supposedly better than the smaller halo getters. The going rate for matched pair of them these days is $40-50.
Pictured in my link is a 1960’s Bugle Boy 6DJ8 with a large halo getter from 1962 (a mini-guide I made for another user):
Finally picked one of these up used. I have a Mjolnir 2 and eager to compare. Already have a well stocked box of tubes. Oughta be fun
I just pulled the trigger on one of those today as well. Very curious about it. Will be final addition to my amps for a while.
Interesting review. I guess it depends at what price you get one. I bought open box from monoprice which was a lot cheaper than 1000 usd he said in review(shiping and customs to EU included). And also I bought it to pair it with planars bigger than sundara so he could test e.g. arya with it. But will see once I have it
I’m considering to do a cap mod, is there a general guide on what to look for when doing a cap mod?
Comparing this to $1000 plus amps is a joke which makes the reviewer’s pov a puzzling one to take.
I was also puzzled by this review. He overpaid which seemed to frame everything after in a nagative light. But he also commented on poor spatial performance, which IME is not an issue with MLP. It is true that MLP can have some trouble with volume pots, though.
Yeah I think as @WaveTheory said he “overpaid” and as @db_Cooper said he was judging the LP’s total cost/value to him as opposed to getting it at basic list and local shipping, then add on any tube rolling etc
Look for caps that have the same capacitance as the ones you’re replacing. The voltage rating can be higher than the stock caps but not lower.
I stopped paying attention to this guy when he started talking about the differences he hears in USB cables (surprise - the audio jewelry sounded better). This is also the only review of his that I’ve seen that was negative so that’s pretty weird for a widely acclaimed product. Maybe he has golden ears and I don’t
Although tbh, after doing the cap mod I realize that the stock build is gimped with cheap parts so maybe there’s something to his review. And we all know about the stock pot and gain so there’s that…
@Hazi59 did a write-up somewhere, I think, about the caps he’s tried and where he ended up. Sounds like significant performance gains can be had for $20-$40 and a little time and soldering skill.
I’ve seen someone experimenting with a higher capacitance, is it worth to try?
It is significant. I spent ~$60 on caps and was pleasantly surprised.
NO! Do not use capacitances other than the stock. They are what they are for a reason.
