Monoprice/Monolith THX AAA Portable Headphone Amp DAC

So you could hook it up but it would not be ideal because you are double amping the signal, because there is no line out on the thx portable. I would say to get something more ideal you would either want to buy a separate dac or get a portable dac/amp with a line out

iFi Black Label time!

MON thank you so much for that, what would you recommend for portable dac/amp with line out which model also a recommendation for a separate dac, again thank you.

Well, if you wanted a simple great sounding balanced dac, the enog 2 pro is good, and if you wanted to get even cheaper you could pick up a ifi zen dac and use it as a dac only (although you would have to get an adapter to use the balanced out on the back). The enog 2 pro is just a clean solid dac but no usb, so if you wanted usb the smsl su8 is a good choice for the price. The ifi is a warmer dac so if you wanted to introduce some warmth into your system it’s pretty nice

For portables, you could get a fiio q5s as that has lots of features and great sound for the price and has line out too (and has an optional thx module)

If you wanted something cheaper the ifi nano black label is a great choice (also warmer dac too) as @Chocolate_Bear mentioned (assuming he wasn’t referring to the more expensive micro lol)

The xduoo xd05 is also very solid

Chocolate-bear thanks, yeah I appreciate what you are saying its another $600.00. I thought pc gaming was an expensive hobby. I want to take advantage of THX tech.

Go big or go home!

Easy for me to say that when it’s not my money being spent. :stuck_out_tongue:

Well I mean with the micro bl I think you would just be better off selling the thx imo lol

I’m actually looking to sell my ifi Nano Black Label if you’re interested, I’ll be posting it on eBay in the next hour

Thank you for that, I am spending money on things I did not research before hand. its a true statement do it right the first time…

Well do keep it in budget here, make sure you are spending it on something that will give you good bang for your buck and match your system well

What’s nice with the Nano is that it’s a good desktop dac/amp but it’s also battery powered to take it on the go. How long has it been since you purchased the THX-AAA portable? Can’t you return it?

Yeah, thanks I should have asked here on the forums, before emptying my wallet on things that would not work together.

It’s not like you ended up with a bad setup or anything, it’s mainly just preference and also just a portable lacking a line out.

What headphones are you using and what do you listen to? Also what type of sound do you like?

How long has it been since you purchased the THX-AAA portable? Can’t you return it?

Its on order, I will call monoprice to ask about returns, I maybe will keep it as a portable, I heard thx sound is real nice. Of course its subjective, lots of people like the chord mojo, they say its more musical. I am looking to buy the Quad ERA-1 I heard they are in line with the Audeze lcd line, and maybe better. I like the headband better on the Quad then the audeze line. I currently have the Sony mdr z7m2, reall, really comfortable. But yeah they really need an amp.

It’s a nice headphone, I personally prefer the lcd 2 at that price, which can be found used for less, but the quad is solid

The Sony Mdr z7m2 put a smile on my face, and very comfortable. I listen to everything, Jazz, Classic, Pop, Rock, sony very ez headphone, does not fatigue. I have the Bose Quit comfort 35 II, for outside, also indoors really moving around the house.

The THX-AAA portable is a great portable amp, great sound quality and lots of power (I powered my Argons with it), but you said you needed a DAC. the ifi Nano does both and it’s affordable and it also has a good clean sound.

For a desktop dac to go with my THX-AAA-887, I went with the SMSL SU-8 and I don’t regret it one bit

Yeah it gets down to comfort for me, even if I sacrifice sound. again its subjective. But yeah lcd 2 and lcd 2 classic very good headphones.

I’m still on your DAC issue. Here’s a good cheap option Drop Grace Design Standard Dac goes for 80$ on Drop and it’s balanced
