I use Audirvana. There is no comparison with VLC Give it a shot, there is a free trial and you can connect also Tidal with it. The interface is nothing special, but the sound is what you are getting it for. Also heard good stuff about Jriver.

tomahawk-player and quod libet are what I recommend.

GitHub is a git repository for free and open source software. If your AV and firewall sets off that’s not GitHub’s fault.

No I went to the .org sites linked to GitHub for the players, but fair different, antivirus sensitivity and what not.

The devs that work on tomahawk-player haven’t renewed their security certificate, thus expired.
As for quod-libet the only link on the page is the manual.
