My be all end all: Cans for casual listening/gaming under $200

So I have them plugged into my galaxy S10 right now and at max volume they are too loud to listen to in a quiet room, however they are good at 70-80% volume. I will say these aren’t ideal for listening on the go due to the cable, and I prefer IEMs. Also they do greatly benefit from a dac/amp. I initially used the es100 before I got the k5 pro, there is a noticeable quality you get, and I feel like the bass is slightly distorted listening on my phone currently.at 80% volume

The ear thing isn’t bad at all, but in comparison to the M570 I own it is very noticeable(before I had them I didn’t mind it as much). My ear cartilage is sensitive on the outside of my ear, and the protrude a bit, so extended pressure on the edges of my ear causes me pain(wearing helmets that cover my ears for an extended time is an issue for me). That being said I can wear this for 3-4 hours or so.

oh wow, those look pretty nice actually. How do they sound and which pads are those?

Comparison I have mine connected to a samsung A10E and I have to fully crank it to full to get actually “loud” which is why I say depends on the audio of the hardware its connected to

Honestly I found nearly every headphone I’ve bought to be slightly brought when I first got them. Not sure if it’s “burn in” or me getting used to it, but they don’t bug me over time. I have a hard time believing the dt770s highs are painful for people, but I have seen z’s opinion on the majority of beyerdynamics.

I did get some brainwavz pads(non-xl) for them and they changed the sound too much for my liking. I love the stock pads, I just wish they were thicker since for me it’s really about the depth and not the actual size.

And ya on my old s7 I think I could have them at max comfortably.

I did at first as well honestly lol this coming from the guy who doesn’t need a shot of liquor to stand the T90 lmfao. I absolutely love my dt 990 and its nowhere near too sharp for me. Though I have like 3 friends who can’t even wear the brighter sounding sennheisers as they say its too bright and very uncomfortable. I gave one my 770 250 ohm just to try and he couldn’t stand it whatsoever it was rather painful for him. It’s hard to actually recommend a treble brightened headphone less you know if they are resistant to it or not. we all hear different. I absolutely love treble but i know others who completely adore dark headphones.

I went on zeos’s recommendations of just using a brainwavz xl pad on them and while it sounds nice I like the Dekoni sheepskin quite a bit more. Though agreed I really like the stock pads they come with.

So it seems like Im going to pickup the 770s. Just out of curiosity would you know how they match up against the yamaha mt5s?

Got them used and was told they were Eikon Lambskins pads. It didn’t change the sounds too much. To me, it tamed the highs a little.

much bassier in comparison. mt5 have some fairly pulled back low bass and neutral mid bass and highs for its bass. mids are fairly neutral and treble just has a little peakyness but is somewhat neutral or darkish sounding. DT 770 on the other hand is a U or V style signature. Very bassy with quite a bit of sub bass more neutral yet presently clean mids and vocals with bright sparkly treble. If I had to choose a headphone between those two? Definitely 770 all the way.

Hell I would take the shure 840s over those yamaha too

Yea i think I’m a bit more treble resistant than most, but not on your level probably haha. I realized this with the t2 pros or whichever had more treble, because I didn’t mind the elevated treble. Personally I think slightly elevated treble gives you more detail and a crisper sound shrug. I have tried to get buddies to try out my headphone collection, and even donated some tin t2’s to a friend, but none of them care and the friend I gave the tins to lost them in a week haha.

I was thinking they looked like zmf alright thanks. Might have to pick those up.

They do indeed! That sparkle brings out quite a lot of details. Though, too much can be graded as “artificial or fake” detail. I love treble when it hits that Ethereal like note like the 990s over there do. One of the reasons I am aiming at trying the Stax as they are said to be like that but good lord are those expensive.

Yup, still trying to find my end game headphone. I thought I was done at the m570, but I prefer the dt770 for 70% of music I listen to. Basically I want the dt770 sound in an open back and comfier(thicker) pads. T50rp and dt1990 are on my list, but I need to sell stuff before I dive deeper. I stopped watching z’s videos for like 8 months after getting the m570 to save me some money haha. I jumped back in to upgrade my desk speakers during quarantine.

So, the only con is that they mount kinda loose. The mount is not as tight as stock but they stay on and don’t fall out. The comfort from the lambskin is awesome though.

That would be probably… argons or Dekoni Blue(just a T50rp in general you can mod it fully opened or buy the T20 which is already open back, Beyers theres no real equivelant there… closest you will get is the 1990 or T1 if you prefer more relaxed and even brighter and bassier since you can switch them out with thicker pads anyway and maybe Fidelio X2HR but this is much more towards a warm headphone rather than bright.

Good to know, though not a problem as long as they stay on the headphone. I like real plush comfortable leathers on my closed backs

@Falenkor, have you tried pad rolling the Helios yet? I’m no Beyer aficionado, but to my ears the Helios with some bigger angled suedes/velours (like Dekoni LCDs) match up to what I expect could be the open back equivalent of the 770.

Hmm, potentially yeah. I tried swapping them when I still had them. You can of course get it relatively close but that 770 has so much more bass in comparison more so when you have the leathers on them. I do think the helios is quite good in its sound but I wouldn’t call it a very close call against the 770. It’s more along the lines of the 880

Since I only really game at my desk and listen to music through my phone I realized I’d prob be better off with headphones that don’t need a dac. Do the 770s 80 ohm still fit the bill?

Yea, youd be fine. Phone might be a bit of a stretch and would be better off from the pc itself though.

Interesting…I wonder if there’s some unit variance. Given the build, it wouldn’t surprise me too much, but mine throw a lot of bass to my ears, especially with the pad swap. Like Argon levels, while treble gets tamed a bit. Think it’s the larger opening most likely. Gives the treble more space to diffuse and bass more space to resonate but also seems to clean it up a little. Bass with stock pads felt a little bloated with some bleed into the mids, but there’s more separation with other pads. Anyway…sounds like you ended up returning them.

I swapped to my newer dekoni sheepskins I had bought and while they definitely got bassier with more punch the 770s just were deeper more quantity and satisfying to my ears as someone who appreciates bass.

Definitely never got that far. Just was a much punchier like dt 880 sound.

I mean considering the kind of build quality I got it wouldn’t surprise me if my copy was completely screwed up.

I mean, would you keep a headphone if you received it in that state? Don’t mean to sound aggressive just really makes me angry. Beautiful headphone with an absolutely beautiful sound but man does that irritate me to no end

theres potential that I could end up buying the headphone again provided I could get one thats properly built RIGHT this time around but I would have to figure out how to go about that bass response. It sounds like the biggest lacking point in the bass wasn’t so much the heavyness of the bass but a pretty lacking sub bass extension and overall deep sound

thanks for all the help!
