Yeah I’d agree for sure. I think that’s the obvious comparison with headphones 
which is probably why I like them so much. Just not an all rounder but I kinda knew that when I bought them.
There are a few exceptions like the new glass animals is very electronic but with subs it’s very nice on the 3/5’s
One experiment I thought about doing to supplement my Harbeths was to try out a Magnepan LRS. It’s a cheap, different-sounding alternative and I already have a pretty beastly amp/electronics to supplement it.
Probably not going to do it any time soon, but maybe you can add that to your short list too. Could be fun.

Two questions I had/have because I have considered them are will my a23+ power them and do I have the space (12x14x8). Just not sure I can pull it off. Also I know there’s the thinking ‘a box speaker is a box speaker’ but I’m pretty new to the game in some ways so I’m finding them different enough to make the experience an enjoyable one.
Your listening room is fairly empty though, yes? So you can have your speakers far into the room, if needed?
12’ is the depth so it’s a bit limited there. 3-4’ is doable because I like sitting away from the back wall as well. I find it sounds better when I do that.

The A23 will be fine. Your room will be fine as well. Your patience may not be - Magnepan is pretty backlogged especially on the LRS.

Given their price and their reputation, everyone should buy a pair. With a Rythmik sub of course.
I just know they can be pretty picky about positioning, room, and power. I have the power and the room, but it’s doubled up as a den/living area. Fortunately, they are easy to move around. Technically, my room is large enough that I should get a larger model.
To be honest though, I don’t want to jump down the rabbit hole of rolling speakers, lol.
I can keep it under wraps knowing that I committed to one model and stuck with it.
This is why i have multiple speakers for each setup, unfortunately I have yet to find a speaker that does each genre right. The less expensive speakers i own really do the more main stream rap, edm, techno genre’s the way I enjoy them and then as we fancy up the price chain the more refined speakers cover the more classical styles of music for ME In manners i find pleasing more in line with my audiofool pallet 
Yeah it’s hard to settle when you like a variety of genres lol
Ok, I’m just going to babble some thoughts and please feel free to ignore and skip over all…especially if any opinions i gave in earlier posts/pm’s seem contrary to what you are personally experiencing.
Klipsch RP600 with GR research upgrade package total cost Canadian minus your time and efforts under $1k all new, save a hundred Or so buying speakers used…You mentioned fast & complex musical passages And based on the size of your room, plenty extra power on hand for headroom in your particular instance. Every review out there with them can’t be that off…
Next, again due to size of the room and spacing concerns i would look for “bookshelf” speakers that are free of bottom end reproduction abilities, you have 2 awesome subs to handle all Needs under 50hz (Even higher, but whatever…) plenty of power on hand and room to play with proper placement. There are so many available to include DIY models that should fill your requirements especially if you look used to maximize your money.
In my VERY limited experience the Maggies really seemed to need lots of floor space away from alll corners and fully a third or so into the room which usually equates into meters/feet that you don’t seem to have available in that room. My apologies if i got this all wrong, i’m really trying to help and not hinder your future enjoyment 
Maggies need space behind them. The sides are not a problem - one of the benefits of open baffle dispersion. Actually open baffle speakers do better with side walls than box speakers.
But, you do want them like 3 feet away from the back wall. They’re light and easy to move though so you can set them back against the wall and only pull them out for listening.

I did look into Maggie’s a bit more lastnight and with the minimum 3 ft (6 ft being ideal) off the back wall and the suggested seating position being 2 times the distance you place the speakers apart from one another (ie speakers 4’ apart and me 8’ feet back in my case) it is doable but probably not ideal and puts me 1 foot off the back wall.
Your Klipsch suggestion seems like a cool one however I’m not the guy to take apart a speaker and upgrade it. I do have respect for those that do however.
I’m going to pump the brakes here though and not pull the trigger on totems or maggies just yet (although I think they’re pretty nice options lol). So many options lol

That’s not written in stone. With my .7s I sit in a an equilateral triangle for best sound. In your case that would be 4’ from each speaker so ~ 5’ back from them.
A general heads up though, Maggies can be more sensitive to placement than conventional speakers so you should be prepared for a lot of experimentation if you go that route.
Not the first time I’ve read that either so that’s good to know. In this case I could do more that 4’ as well.
Beginning to gather some experience here as well. Triangle genese trio’s are speakers I had to give up on in part due to time restrictions on the return policy. Thanks for the heads up 
Replacement amp is installed. 2 subs speaker level. Big difference for sure and proving to be more difficult to work with than one in my room.
Not sure I can get the job done here with positioning alone. Tried numerous positions and degrees of toe in keeping the subs on the same plain as the speakers. I’ve kept all the recommended settings and haven’t touched volume or adjusted crossover. Might have to try those or get bass traps.
