Need recommendations for good competitive FPS headphones

Might order the K712 pro, will definitely look into the other 2 headphones you mentioned tomorrow. The 58X will be my last option mainly because of the hassle with shipping and returns through massdrop. Still have the MX50’s right now and the sound is OK, but I want more.

Sounds good, something to keep in mind. SHP9500 is cheap out the gate around $50 if your shopping smart however, it’s modifications can bring that price up to $150 potentially maximum. Pad swaps are up to the consumer and x2hr isn’t particularly friendly with pad swaps you need a pad larger than the one already on it… it makes it a bit unsightly but it will work. as for the k712 it has a respective signature… closer to a bit of neutral and the treble falls off quite a bit. it may appear slightly boring if this is the case it has it’s own pads(they have adapters so you have to make sure the pad is actually for the headphone) I use yaxi on mine but these are really expensive($60-$70 less you shop smart)

If you want to know the current headset your using’s signature is a bit of an oddball. It’s a sublte V signature much like the m50x you have now which is why you ar getting essentially the same result.

Got the K712’s today and I am really enjoying these headphones. The sound of these headphones is amazing. Comfort wise there are almost no issues, just a tiny bit too tight on top of my head. The K712’s might be a keeper. The sound when I play COD Warzone is really good and a big improvement from the previous headphones imo. But suprised with some of the plastic parts on this headset but that’s it.

They take a couple weeks to break in from my experience. Suggest stretching them a bit seei f that issue with the clamp there eases up. Headphones definitely aren’t like gaming headsets… comfort usually isn’t the absolute highest priority from my experience.

Kind of figured you may like those instead. K712’s are a warmer signature with a massive soundstage and some slight imaging issues but nothing you can’t work around. K702 is it’s alternative and is the bright signature of the bunch.

Well, provided you got it at a good price as I can find k712 for like $200 and k7xx for potentially cheaper which k7xx is a slight alternative to the k712 yet very similar and can be cheaper I think it’s quite alright to have some plastic. However, going into other headphones you tend to realize just how well built Beyers are in comparison.

Sounds good, do let me know if you feel something can be improved perhaps a seperate headphone can fix the issue or some fixable solution can be brought to attention. Hope you enjoy it

Anytime, if you have questions feel free to ask. I’ll help if I can

Hi @Falenkor ,
I am new too everything amp/dac related and probably sound it seems. I loved your detailed response and wanted too ask real quick if I understood correctly.

I am using the DT 770 32 ohm pro with some PeaceApo modification and wanted too upgrade to a DT 880 600 ohm (fps gaming related upgrade(Apex…)). So obviously I need an Amp or Dac or both ? didnt really get that part, if the iFi Zen DAC (v2) is enough or do I need an extra amp on top. Also I read that the iFi Zen DAC does not do as well as the ifi Zen Can in regards with the 880, so maybe get that if its enough to power it.

I am using the Asus Maximus X Hero Motherboard, don’t know if thats relevant.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hey there, sorry for the late response. Things have been rather hectic and still having to check these with my phone since the internets still down for the count.

Welcome to hifiguides, hopefully I can offer some helpful advice.

880s sound quality upgrade in 600 ohm is definitely noticeable but its a different sound signature all together as its more mid forward and bright while 770 is a V signature where the mids are more recessive… at the same time 880 is semi open backed and airier in sound. It’s a good directly for a more surrounding the head kind of sound placement and it has better detail retrieval alongside a more marginal increase in imaging capabilities. As for the need for an amp and dac, yes you will need one for the 600 ohm however, the zen dac over there will not properly drive the 600 ohm beyers. You would need an amp for that. The ifi there mainly have all their power inside of their balanced port respectively but the DT beyers cannot make use of this without modding through the use of sodering.

the zen can is solely an amp and designed to stack ontop of the zen dac, while the zen dac is a combo unit. Can is indeed stronger and performs better with 880 however, while the zen can will run the 600 ohm beyer there it won’t push it all the way and you won’t get the most out of the 880s without that balanced port. I would recommend potentially looking into a modded variation if you plan to stick with the ifi zen can there otherwise change the amp.

not particularly relevant when were talking about a 600 ohm headphone.

Honestly, I would say if your just looking for an entry level setup just grab a schiit stack, monoprice liquid spark combo of some sort works too

gamer quality but lacking audiophile sound quality would just be grabbing the soundblaster g6 over there since it runs the 600 ohm beyers…

Thanks for the Hard work, its not easy from the phone, I hope your Internet comes back soon!

I would get a good stack like shiit but the shippment to germany is a pain… 6-8 weeks I dont want to wait so long. So Something like a G6 a one piece ready to go equipment is defiantly a good choice but maybe it’s not worth the money if I can get a better setup for the same price range. Or is there a better one piece than the G6 ? I dont mind if it’s a little bit more expensive like 250 ish, I saw the Mayflower arc mk1 but they are also not available at the moment… .

I saw your comments a lot in other posts that is why I asked you directly and I would get the T1 if it wouldn’t be that damn expensive, like holy shit I am a 32ohm DT770 gamer and didn’t know that’s how we go up the ladder

But yeah I am searching for that better Soundstage as well as clarity so I can get that “advantage” in comp, it also seems like for a total of 350-400 the 880’s is the best I can get for my purpose.

As for me, I’m using HyperX Cloud Flight. These gaming headsets cost around 150$ and sound really great. They also feel comfortable on my head. So, I would recommend one of those. I also heard that corsair gaming headsets are quite good too.

Cloud flights are bassy as hell. Awful at competitive. If you need a cheap headset run the cooler masters mh751 or 752 if you want the equalizer. 600 series isn’t bad either for headsets. For the sake of sound and placements though I’d highly encourage getting away from the headsets. Get a modmic and a headphone dont turn back

G6 will run up to 600 ohm cans like the beyers so for the money? Honestly less you need audiophile grade sound it’s a hell of a nice item… plus you can get a better amp later as the dac in g6 isn’t bad just the amp sound quality is meh

For $250 ish I’d say look into the budget stacks always recommended

Skip the Mayflower.

Yea they definitely aren’t cheap. If your good with 770 then just stick with that save up. 1770 or 177x go are the cut above that one but are more than double the price. Though if after soundstage consider the other dt like the 880. 1990 and t1 are gods yea but they come with a price

I listened to the 177x Go on my Magni 2 and I liked the sound, but I thought the detail/clarity was a bit lacking for $350. That being said, for closed options I’m not sure what else is around $300-$400.

You are also competing with Sundara, HD Zeus, a bunch of amazing headphones.

If you absolutely require closed then they’re a fantastic option and they look gorgeous. The cable is microphonic which means you are dumping another $25-$50+ for a replacement cable if you are like me and literally can’t stand that.

I used the 58x for a few years now gaming competitively and they have lost their high end detail over the years but it was by far one of my favorite so far… right now I’m using the dt 990 250 ohm premiums and I don’t really like them for gaming… the sound is tin and no life and gun shots are just obnoxious…and the imaging and separation in my opinion isn’t as good as the Sennheiser… I haven’t tried the 880 but I bet it’s close to the same experience… Running su9 dac and sp200 amp… 660s are my favorite so far!

I like the 990 for what its capable of but I can agree that coming from a sennheiser that excels in mids with a rather clean lively sound and going to the 990… can be a huge deal breaker… the 990 is V shaped so the mids dip out… 250 ohms also isn’t the best case for the 990 and I definitely preferred the 600 ohm for the very reason you describe as that ethereal tin like treble can be a bit off putting… its still a damn fine headphone… just more up to the persons preference really. Still… I would take the Tygr 300r or DT 880 over the 58x jubilees… DT 880 is the one where the mids are still there and it doesn’t have that tin like sound…

This absolutely depends on what your powering them with in many cases since beyers are much pickier than a sennheiser… 58x jubilee over there can be powered by a phone while the 990 needs an amp in very many cases… even losing its capabilities through the use of the stronger motherboards that can get it “loud”. 58x is no joke but I definitely can place my sounds much better through a 990 than 58x

completely different headphone. 990 is V shaped with the mids being cut. 880 is more neutral bright… at 600 ohms the bass is slightly raised, mids are more present and in the mix, and treble is raised but not as obscenely high as the 990… its not even close to being as sharp and annoying.

^ this right here is why your beyer is sounding so sharp and tin like though… bad pairing… that particular pairing is quite sterile and actually the amp there will make the 990 sound even sharper(speaking from experience on that actually as I ahve used the sp200 before). Great for sennheisers and things like focal in some cases… not so much for beyers

honestly, I love this headphone I just hate the soundstage… fantastic sound, amazing imaging capability, phenomenal cosmic power itty bitty living space… its so intimate that it makes it hard for me as someone who also plays much larger fps to get along with it… still as a well rounded headphone… its a damn good set of cans
