New Pair of Open Back Headphones

I always like to have a pair of open back headphones/headset for gaming, music, and movies as an alternate for my closed backs. I have a pair of U-320 that are falling apart. So I plan on replacing them with some new Sennheisers. I have narrowed it down the:

  1. PC37x ($120)

  2. HD58x ($160)

  3. HD599 ($142.99)

I am planning on getting a V-Moda Boom Mic if the headphones do not come with a mic. Any advice? Which of these are the best sounding in terms of drivers. I am starting to get into hi-fi and audiophile stuff so which is a good entry level pair of phones?

Think you might need some research also and not just narrow different headphones down. :slight_smile:

This one. PC37x ($120), has a mic build in. Easy way, no need for V-Moda.

HD58x uses different type of cable and connectors, cannot use V-Moda 3.5mm (or modmic) plugin.

HD599 probably? has same type of input mechanism than HD598 so you need to modify the headphone input before you can use V-Moda 3.5mm plugin.

BUT you should be able to use ModMic 5 with HD599 but is it better than PC37x? Dont know but will cost more with ModMic 5.

Z also said that he liked the PC37x more than HD599 so. I might be good choice, easier and cheaper.

out of the 3 the 58x is the best to my personal ears best imaging and just overall detail. it’s often compared to the 660 for a reason it’s just that good. but like @MadGman said it’s not compatible with the v moda’s. you could use a nice desk mic like a blue snowball as you can find that for pretty cheap used or on sale or grab something like a modmic wireless.

You can use Antlion Modmic wireless;

Or any microphone out of the thousands of mics that gets the job done.

In terms of pure sound, the 58x wins hands down.

Thanks guys. I’m going with the 58x I think for my next buy. And yes, I realized the V-MODA would not work, but the mod mics would. Great catch. I could’ve really fucked up there.

I like my Blue Snowball desktop mic. Works well.
