I was wondering if anyone had a suggestions for stepping up from my ATH-AD700Xs? I really like the way they present strings and female vocalists, but I hate the cable. Well, the connector actually broke. Seeing as I’ve had them for a few years I thought It was time for an upgrade.
I already have 58Xs but I find they don’t present vocals quite as well. I would also like them to have a removable cable. Does anyone know of headphones that would present vocals and strings like the Audio-Technicas but have a removable cable?
In terms of power, I just got an EL Amp 2 so they don’t need to be as easy to power as the 700Xs. In terms of price, I would like them to be in the few hundred dollar range. I’m not really willing to spend over $500 Canadian, so about $350 US max and even less if I need to order from the US. Which brings my last constraint, BEING IN CANADA , a lot of shit isn’t sold here directly and importing brings up the cost a lot for things in the couple of hundred dollar range.
I’m struggling to find an upgrade, so I think I’m stuck soldering a new connector on it for now.
This will be a bit of a different headphone in comparison but still a good recommendation here so I will +1 for the sundara. Offers planar slam and speed
Another recommendation for you since you appreciated the ad700x but wanted a detachable cable would be the AKG K702 K712 or K7xx though I recommend making sure your getting them at the right price, akg for some reason here in the US wants to price them in the upper $250-$350 despite them selling for around $100 or so. The k7-- series is similar in signature to the ad700x but a larger soundstage and some slight inaccuracies in the imaging. Not as bassy just like the ad700x but you can help that by changing over to the comfortable Yaxi pads. 702 and 712 will be somewhat brighter than 700x and 7xx will have the lower treble dipped but other than that relatively close to ad700x
For some reason, I always forget AKG exist. I checked out some reviews and Zoes’ sound demos, I think the 712 might be a good fit. Looking on amazon, I see what you mean about the price. I’ll be setting up price alerts on CamelCamelCamel and waiting.
I thought of purchasing Audio-Technica ATH-AD700X Open-Air Headphones (this review pushed me toward that decision - https://streammentor.com/best-open-back-headphones-for-gaming/), but it seems that those headphones are obsolete right now. Or am I mistaken?
Despite what Youtube-Shills Reviewers want to sell tell you, good stuff in the audio world stays good.
You may have to replace drive belts, ear cushions or cables in a few years, but it stays good.
Further, when you are happy with a purchase, you are good. That is it. Enjoy them.
ATH AD2000. More even treble, better for fem. vocals and strings, just a more pleasant FR overall. Can be hard to get but def. worth it. Paid 230 for mine. I’ve heard other Audio Technicas like the W5000, AD1000, R70X, AWAS,AWKT,A1000Z, AD700X, the AWAS was the only one that beared a resemblance. I’d look on head-fi probably, good luck.
definitely not obsolete… the 700x is a champion in the budget region for gaming and damn good at what it does. It does have its flaws of course… you can go to the AD 1000x to resolve many of them or the 2000x to resolve essentially all of them and really dial in the imaging if this series of headphone is what your looking for… other headphones with mids and highs as a focus point is Sennheisers brand, AKG k7 series of headphones, Focals brand, Beyerdynamics headphones specifically the 880, T1, T5 in some cases, amiron, and 1990, and then Hifiman with its planars having a mids and highs focus point which you should look into Sundara, ananda, or edition xs for them
hope you can try some these figured id give you a good range list there… hope you find what your looking for!
