Recommendation Closed Back Music/Gaming:

Hi guys, I would like a closed headphones that is good for gaming and music, I own an A90 + D90 and a THX 887 so I should be able to drive properly pretty much any headphone. I already have high-end open back headphones for gaming such as the HD800S or the Arya but I would like something closed that does not leak sound for night listenings. I have no budget limit, I can consider different price ranges, thanks in advance.

Not a gamer, but based on your gear, I’m taking a guess that you’re into clinical detail and would want something along those lines that’s good for competitive gaming?

On the upper end of the spectrum might be something like the Focal Stellia, which I’ve seen referenced as a strong closed back TOTL headphone for gaming. For a less costly option, also from Focal, would be the Elegia.

Other common rec’s for more immersive gaming might be Nighthawk Carbons if you can find them, or Argons. Both are semi-open, but pretty isolating and don’t leak that much. The DT177x Go from Drop or MMX300 could be good options from Beyer, again leaning perhaps more immersive as opposed to competitive.

Thanks for the reply guys, I actually was already considering taking the Verite Closed as top of the range closed hp, but for the moment I would like to keep myself on a less expensive headphone so that I can use it with less worries during gaming sessions, I’m going to take the VC at some point in any case, but I prefer to stick with mid to high priced headphones atm (not TOTL price). Like ~€1K budget max. I’m going to take a look at the other less expensive options, if you have more suggestions please, let me know  .

I have the 177X Gos and they are great for gaming and music. The two pads you get also offer different frequencies so you can tailor your sound for whatever you like more. Imaging is great, soundstage is small but immersive and intimate. I can use these for Rainbow 6 and hear pretty much all directions for footsteps) movement. For music I love them for metal and electronic with the sheepskin pads. Although they lose out on detail but retain the immersion and intimacy.

Then the nighthawk carbons, these are my go to headphone for gaming due to their complete immersion and precise imaging. I can tell above/below, left/right, forward)behind really easily. If you can find them they do everything the 177x does but a bit better. The frequency response is going to be darker and lacks in treble and some vocals. They usually come with 2 pads used, which offer almost there same options for sound as the 177x. I really love these to death but not every genre is great on them.

Those are the two I have experience with so hopefully this helps a bit :grimacing: feel free to ask any questions about those.

Thought I’d jump in. I’m also looking for a closed set for gaming however my budget much less, 177x go still the best in the sub $500? I’ve seen the T5P 2nd gen in drop into the $800 range a few times, and Recently the focal elegia has been dropping into the sub $400-500? Thanks!

Thanks for the suggestions, how good/bad are the Ether CX for gaming?
