Roon-Runners Corner

I didn’t bother to read this as I have no idea what relevance it has to me, but having adhd myself i skimmed it and saw that you have adhd too. poor fucker! hyperfixation bursts are a blessing of determination/diligence and a curse of avoiding deep detail unless necessary lol

yeah, ignore 90% of this thread until you have a stable Roon streaming system up and running.

yeah, 75% super power, 25% train wreck. I try to focus on the super power side

I have no medication for it right now (plus multiple crippling side effects of the adhd) so i’m like 90% train smash rn. Working on it tho, picking up ritalin tomorrow!

I really hope it goes well for you. I take Adderall every day and it makes a HUGE difference for me. The other thing I focus on is diet and exercise - so much of brain chemistry can be influenced that way. When I’m eating carefully, working out regularly, I’m the best version of myself. And the Adderall gives me just a little more control on top of this.

But back on topic, regarding your Roon setup, a picture will help:

The same PC can be used as the Core and Remote, but it’s usually not recommended.

Doe’s this make sense?

@elementze

This just happened… due to anxiety and adhd… whole table is busted but possibly fixable

Update: Got the ritalin, and got the desk back together and everything in place!

yes it makes sense, with a few caveats. Why it not recommended to use the roon core as the remote? it just seems like the natural choice to me. I’m also not sure how to hook up to the rpi4 through the internet from the pc (and remote too??? ugh)

What would be the benefit of using a tablet running the roon app as the remote vs my computer running the roon app?

You can, it works fine. Many people will put the Roon server in another room so they don’t hear the fans. But nothing stops you from using the Core as the Remote.

It’s just over your local network. Put everything on the same network and if it’s configured correctly the Core will detect the endpoints.

But…

If you connect you DAC via USB to your Core (or Remote) you don’t need an endpoint. Roon will detect the DAC and allow you to stream to it. The Roon endpoint is really to facilitate moving the Core to another room so you can stream over your network.

Ah I see, perfect. My idea is to get as much usb out of my signal chain as possible as it’s terrible for audio (allegedly said by the inventor of USB or something) and get my pc out of the cable signal chain cable-wise because the emi will be BAD being a beefer gaming pc, that is what the pi2aes is for. so as long I connect the rpi4 and my pc to the same internet, they will autodetect eachother in roon and I can use my pc as the remote and core but the endpoint as the rpi4 with no worries? (modern diy computers are dead quiet, and I will be listening to music on speakers in the background with open ear headphones on when gaming anyways so noise isn’t an issue)

If I use roon, would there be any reason to use foobar? Do I need to use something like foobar with roon?

Would a 4gb rpi4 suffice or do I need a beefer honking 8gb model? Is a 32gb microsd card more than enough built in storage? All I plan on doing with it is roon music streaming from only my computer.

now that I think about it, will I be able to use a usb dac (for gaming) and the roon app seperately on my gaming computer at the same time? or will I need to use a tablet control point running roon when I want to use my headphones via usb dac on my computer while gaming to hear the two seperately at the same time?

no, roon is the audio player. you don’t need an additional player.

This should be sufficient, just make sure you get the version of pi2aes that connects correctly to the rpi4.

Given that you are just starting, maybe hold off on the pi2aes, and get it up and running with just a rpi4 first. It’s a little simpler.

playing through the same DAC? No. Either roon controls the DAC or your PC controls the DAC. but if you are talking about two separate DACs, then the answer is yes. From one PC you can stream audio to a USB attached DAC, and Roon can stream audio to another DAC, both at the same time.

I don’t plan on actually doing this soon, just planning for no reason other than to have one and it helps me learn anyways lol.

Sweet! that way i can game with a usb dac plugged into headphones while steaming music to my endpoint going to my speakers (I want seperation and individual control through my computer for both)
