A new take on Delta Sigma DACs, with couple extras on top.
I will be purchasing one at the same time as I snag a Valhalla 3 next week.
Update 1: A lot of chatter going on over on the other forum in the main Schiit thread. Most of the bells and whistles of Mimir are only realized in the Forkbeard app. At this time the Android app is still in development, so the only way to enable those features are via iOS. As an Android user, I won’t be able to test out all those features unless I borrow an iPad (or see if my older one is compatible).
Features include PEQ, Balance controls, NOS mode (bypasses the filters of the ESS DAC and disables their inhouse DSP filter/Mesh Filter, Digital Volume Control, and over the air updates (future functionality coming down the line*).
I am still looking forward to trying out the Mesh filter, and I am hopeful that they will get out the Android app sometime this year (Jason’s law not withstanding).
Mimir is on its way to me along with Valhalla 3. So … fun times ahead.
Very early impressions of Mimir. Mimir sounds like no other DS DAC I have heard, and it comes closer to my Yggdrasil MIB than I would have thought. I would say that it is more detailed and has better staging than the Bifrost 2/64 , yet it has non of the harshness of other sub $1,000 DS DACs. I would say that if you don’t care about modular upgrades, skip the Bifrost and get a Mimir.
A slight update.
Schiit Audio is working on getting mesh into Modi as well, and they might try to make it a less expensive option for Bifrost 2 as well. No dates nor prototypes mentioned, so we probably won’t see anything for a while.
I tried Mimir with the Vali 3 yesterday and it pairs really well with that amp too. If Schiit does indeed come out with a mesh Modi, it might make the perfect stack with the Vali 3 (at its price point). I doubt the Modi version will be as good as the Mimir, but we shall see.
Thanks for the update.

Mimir seems promising! For clean audio systems, protecting sensitive circuitry from voltage spikes is essential. That’s where something like the NUP4202W1T2G shines—it provides robust ESD protection, ensuring your components stay safe and distortion-free in high-fidelity setups.
Did you compare it directly with the Bifrost? Seriously looking at Mimir or another MMB2.
I have yet to do an A/B test between the two, as the Bifrost 2/64 is currently in my two channel setup. It is mostly derived from memory, and my A/B comparison I did between the Bifrost 2/64, and Yggdrasil+ MIB. Personally I prefer the sound of the Yggdrasil+ MIB vs the Bifrost 2/64, and the Mimir is closer to the Yggdrasil than it is to the Bifrost’s tuning as well as overall presentation. As I am keeping all 3, I do enjoy them in different setups. The most noticeable differences (to me) between the Yggdrasil & Mimir vs the Bifrost 2/64 is that the other two fair better in complex/busy tracks (more separation), and the soundstage is slightly wider as well as deeper.
YMMV, and the only way to know which one sounds best is to try them for yourself (I know an expensive venture, but the only sure way). There is also the fact that MMB2 is going away for good (at least that is what I took from the last live stream), and if you really want one now would be the time. Mimir represents a new venture in their DAC design, and as I have mentioned they are working on a Modi variant of Mesh. Yggdrasil is also getting a DS variant in the form of the “Biggy” with their FPGA based design called Singular. They will make both MB and FPGA DACs “and see which one wins out”.
I know I am rambling, but their is a lot to consider at the moment regarding Schiit’s product lineup (or shakeup).
Edit:
Also before I forget.
Welcome to Hifi Guides!
You’ve done a great job in comparing the schiit offerings. Since I already have a MMB2, I’ll probably pick up a mimir. If it is being compared to iggy and gumby, it’s a high value at this price point. I like the bass definition I get with MMB2 in my main. The Mesh may or may not have that, but I was also looking for more soundstage and separation.
Mimir may be a good fit my mid-fi system. I’ve considered a bifrost or a tricked out j2, but I didn’t want to break the bank on too much DAC. I’ve been waiting for Schiit’s singularity-based DAC to come out, but that tech will be reserved for the high end stuff based on what I’ve seen. Thanks!
Glad to be of help.
Yeah there isn’t any eta on Singular for the G2 nor the BF 2. I think the last I heard was that the G2 card is going to happen, but no firm date as of yet. In the case of the BF 2 the next upgrade will most likely be Multiform which will trickle down form the G2 at some point. If/when the BF 2 upgrade happens, I will most likely send mine in for the upgrade (currently in my two channel setup).
I hope you enjoy the Mimir.
