They’re the ones.
I also agree with others that you should leave windows to 24 48k. Windows doesn’t upscale as well as the Bifrost 2 does. I trust Roon will, but not windows.
It sounds better as I go through my list again with the songs still fresh in my mind.
Or is it just expectation bias…? The mind is a funny thing.
That is what I do too, 24/192. Right or wrong dependent on your take on the subject. It sounds better to me, YMMV. I would definitely try it though, and then leave it for a while - this switch back and fourth repeatedly, quickly, IME does not do anything any justice regarding evaluation. Except with extreme instances.
That I can not answer - but, I will say that when doing eval’s of this nature I do have a playlist just for that purpose that I use for testing any gear. That way I am familiar with that set of tracks and better able to notice differences even subtle ones, without being distracted by analyzing a “new” track on top of the gear too.
Honestly after putting 20-30 hours with gear (leaving the DACs on and not shutting them off either) is how you really learn your gear. You can’t A/B and get every detail right away. It was M0N advice more or less to spend time solid with gear and not just fast swap A/B; as always he was right.
He told me the same thing.
It is in no way a bad DAC. It is now in the system full time. Hopefully my appreciation will grow over time. Or maybe, like a good referee, I will never even think about it again as it goes about its job.
I want to add one more thought, as I am sure nothing I am saying is really “New” breakthrough information.
For myself - when I am evaluating something new I’ve found it’s better to step out of “Analyze” mode and for that evaluation time period (whatever that duration may be) is to just step back and use the gear as you would normally and try to displace yourself from “looking” for the effects and just let them come to you. It’s usually when I am not looking for something different that I actually notice differences.
I also think setting windows to exclusive mode should help. I believe it would allow certain programs to send the exact bitrate of the song to the dac, the bf2 will then do any sampling. Windows settings will be for everything else. There may be some issues switching between modes though suck as foobar then a YT.
The displays on my other DACs have not confirmed that… but I can’t confirm it on the BF2 and it’s likely a configuration error on my side/crappier software.
Considering the headphones you have, it should make a noticeable but not really super large difference or anything, yet. I think you might find that later on the difference gets more pronounced when you move to something like a clear or similar level, while it will benefit you some right now, it might make more of a change you were hoping for when you get to that next level of can
On top of that, the “big differences” a lot of people talk about are actually very very subtle. But those changes can mean the world for how some of the music comes through.
From my experience, I used to have the SDAC-B feeding my thx789. Then I bought the modius. After I tried the modius for the first time with thx789. I went and pack the SDAC immediately .
I had the SDAC-B and thx stack for almost a year. I knew how they sound. I picked the difference between both DAC instantly.
Well, I guess schiit happens. I payed for 2 day shipping through FedEx. It shipped last Thursday so Saturday, right. Nope, they gave me a delivery date of Monday the 15th. Okay, I can live with that. They put it on a truck for a coast to coast trip in 2 days? Shouldn’t almost $50 buy you seat on the plane? It arrived in Memphis on Sunday morning the 14th, well before the weather. Had it even left that night it would have made it to Kinston NC before morning, than a quick trip to Durham and out for delivery. Nope, still in Memphis. I’ve gotten over night from Hong Kong from FedEx, so I know they can do it. Sorry, I’m just frustrated and needed to vent
It will be worth the wait. I’ve paid for the 2day before as well and had it take longer. It happens, still not fun when it is you.
When it does arrive, try to have a little more patience - since its cold out - let it sit around for a few hours to stabilize to room temp before powering it on - and then after you power it on let it sit for another hour or so - or however long you can stand it. The Bifrost 2 likes to be warm. I leave mine on always. r2r and multibit seem to like being left on.
Good luck - hope it gets to you soon. Be sure to post some pics in “What did you buy today” and show it off!
I’m starting to think it’s just not meant to be. The bifrost was finally out for delivery today. I had it sent to my work due to signature required. Our office is open from 9am - 6pm. There is almost always someone there. I was out on the property and my manager had to drop off her car at the dealer, her assistant went to pick her up. The office was closed for 15 minutes. Guess when FedEx showed up. Hopefully tomorrow.
Edit to add. I ordered a Jot 2 to pair with it. The wait begins again
It has arrived and is warming as we speak
Yes, but are YOU warming up as well?
Yes Sir !!!
If nothing else, I now know what instrument separation sounds like. This Dac is fun, but not perfect. I’ll give it a few days.
That’s the first thing I noticed with the BF2 as well.
