šŸ”· Schiit Jotunheim 2

Congrats on the Bifrost 2 !!! I have a great passion for mine. I also particularly enjoy the match-ups of Bifrost 2 with the Jot 2 and also Liquid Platinum.

I have never heard a 789 so I have no input, and even if I did I would trust @WaveTheoryā€™s ears and experience over mine. All I can do is honestly let you know how much I enjoy the Bf2/Jot2 together. Using balanced out from BF2 into balanced in on the Jot 2 - and then using either SE or BAL headphone out. There is some really good ā€œsynergy magicā€ in that combo as one might expect with both of them being pieces of Schiit (lol).

Are most amp/dac combos like the Jot2 these days easily connectable to an ipad pro?

Iā€™m thinking of buying a unit but my work setup is an ipad pro with external keybord and trackpad.

Thanks peeps

Should be good with a usb-A to usb-C cable that transmits data. I will connect my ipad now and again to my dac that has usb input.

:pray:t2::pray:t2: Thanks!

Edit: sorry, usb-B to usb-C OR usb-A to usb-B with an adapter for usb-A to usb-C. That was a lot of usbā€™s

Is the True Multibit DAC you can get with the Jot2 (for $200) exactly the same as in the BF2?
If yes, then it is quite a bargin for that extra cost and the major reason for me to look into the Jot2.

No, itā€™s like the Dac in the Modi Multibit not like the BF2 which sounds better than the Modi Multibit.

I think youā€™d be better off getting a stand-alone Dac instead of one bundled with the Jot2.

Hi, I was considering buying a Jotunheim 2 to run balanced for my DT 177X GOs. However, at 32 ohms impedance, and (according to Amazon) 101DB sensitivity, the headphone seems to be considered somewhat sensitive. I noticed that this review mentioned having issues with the gain being too high. Has anyone else had any issues with the volume levels, and would this be a bad pairing with my headphones? My DAC is a Modius, and I donā€™t have any attenuators.

Hi and welcome to HFGF!

I have a Jot 2, also Bifrost 2 & Modius, and have used both DACs with the Jot 2 using the balanced outputs from each DAC into the balanced input on the Jot 2., because why not if you gotā€™m.

I have not experienced any issues with volume levels, or the ability to finely control volume.
Typical useable range on the Jot 2 volume pot for me (demonstrated as hour hands on a clock) is 7:30 - 10, sometimes to 11 if I am really rocking it out and also dependent on which phone is being worked. I should also state for the record that I have the Jot 2 gain setting in the ā€œhighā€ position - itā€™s probably a subjective point but it sounds better to me there.

Some examples of phones in my rotation that I work with the Jot 2, and that compare (impedance / sensitivity specs) to the set you listed are:

Focal Elegia
Impedance: 35 Ohms
Sensitivity: 105 dB

Hifiman Edition X v2
Impedance: 25 Ohms
Sensitivity: 103 dB

Fostex TH900mk2
Impedance: 25 ohm
Sensitivity: 100 dB

I have no experience with IEMs therefore, no data.

TL;DR
I do not take advantage of the ā€œfullā€ range available with the volume pot when using phones as those mentioned. But when I do connect for example, my LCD-2 PF (70 ohms / 101 dB) I do use the volume pot typically about another hour higher (min/max range). Indicating to me that if I were to use phones that are even harder to drive, I would be taking more advantage of the range of control available.

AKA - I see no issues and believe it is normal operation.

My Hart audio modular single ended showed up today, so I thought I give the Jotunheim 2 a go single ended. Wow!
As WaveTheory said in his review. They are completely different sounds. Balanced is analytical, single ended is just fun! You do loss some of the finer details, but itā€™s much more engaging. There is room for both sound signatures and Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll use both, depending on moodā€¦ Sometimes itā€™s just better to kick back and let the music roll. Now I have to listen to my whole library again

Edit to add: The Jot 2 is being feed by a Bifrost 2 listening to 24/44100 flac files into my Elex. My Pile of Schiit is getting bigger. I ordered a Loki mini+ (in black) that should be here Monday. This is going to be so much fun!

Looking good there! If I had it to do over again I would have gone with the Black vs Silver on all my Schiit.

Excited for you! I really enjoy mine.

Coming from THX amps, say goodbye to any treble harshness. Very happy with what Iā€™m hearing so far through the Focal Clear MG. Havenā€™t heard the SE output yet.

This is not to start a war. actually was surprised to see people on ASR defending schiit for being upfront that this amp was not meant for them. more of a labor of love if you will for audiophiles who like cool stuff and believe it makes a difference. still measures well in my opinion and amirs to be fair.

I donā€™t understand the comparison to the Liquid Platinum, which is a $799 tube amp, to the Jot 2, a $399 SS amp. I get that Stoddard sort of called it a $2,400 amp, but doesnā€™t the LP match up more appropriately to the Mjolnir 2, which lists for $849 and has tubes?

As I was saying in the review, I think we must consider the MLP to be more like a $500 amp at this point. I agree it originally listed at $799, but it spent the vast majority of 2020 at $500 or lower. At that price, it must be considered as an option and as a comparison to Jot 2, IMO. Keep an eye on Monopriceā€™s website for it, too. It jumps in price by multiple hundreds of $$$ every couple weeks. Currently at $799, but was $499 for the last few weeks.

The MLP is a ā€œHybridā€ amplifier and IMO leaning closer to SS than Tube. True the tube stage front end gives you a taste of ā€œtubeā€ sound, but the output being SS provides typically more output power and versatility. Comparing a MLP with a Jot 2 is IMO reasonable.

Also, when I ordered my MLP it was listed at $399.00 USD.
