Sennheiser 599 or others

Hi everyone, i’m a little new in headphones, i’m trying to choose a headphone that is good for classical music, wired (not BT), over ear and closed back (for the option of listening during the bus, but open back is still optional limiting myself for home listening).

As from what i’ve read, I am now considering a few options:

  1. Sennheiser 599.

  2. Fiio ft1.

  3. Akg361 or akg371

Any other recommendation is welcomed, if there is a way to choose the best prefernce without having to actually try all the options.

You may have had insufficient power for the 600.
A good headphone for classical at a reasonable price is the
hifiman Sundara, which originally was about $350 but now on Amazon
for only $179. It’s open back and should be paired with an amp, but
even the inexpensive JDS Labs Atom works fine. I have both, as well as other gear. Home use of course. Fiio also has dac/amp combos.
I have the AKG 361 which has more low end, but less fine detail and
perhaps to your liking…also closed back for bus use and requires no
separate amp.
If you can afford, you may like the much better Meze 99 Classic closed back, which again is more mellow and low end and is also easy to drive without an amp.
The Sennheiser momentum 4 wireless would be another
option for you and has seen good reviews here. Also on sale lately.
Others will have ideas as well. Good luck.

Edit I should have asked what you are now using for source gear…
phone with dongle dac, or a DAP, or computer, already have a dac/amp?

I’ve actually owned all of them. My pick would be the AKG K371 and a $9 Apple USB to 3.5mm adapter which is more than enough to power those. The tuning out of the box doesn’t require equalizing, and replacement pads are readily available if you wear them out. They come with long and short length cables which is nice, and very light. The FT1 is ok if you want more noise isolation since they fit over the ear, but pads are tricky to remove (I tried).

K371 + Apple adapter for easy setup and it’s fun, but you don’t have to dive into equalizing them (on the FT1 I had to EQ them or I wouldn’t use them).

@ Dunring Good ideas. For easy phone use I like Amazon’s Xumee adapter for $14.
Curious, since I have not compared…what do you prefer/like with the
AKG 371 vs the 361?

If you want to use them on the bus, I’d probably go closed back. The HD599 might be nice at home, but being open back makes it a pretty different choice for your use case.

Between those options, I’d personally look at the FT1 or K371 first. And honestly, if you can try them before buying, that’ll probably tell you more than specs or AI recommendations.
