Shortbus Audio Anomaly (and more possibly)

Weekend update:

New tech (or something). We got the 4 1.5"mm front chamber vents, as shown. It’s a little hard to see, but I got some custom silicone O-Rings, and was able to make a channel for them to fit exactly perfect, so now the spring setup works perfectly for a full air seal. The point with this is to allow anyone to completely mod the IEM, remove the driver, replace it, change venting, etc. Literally everything.

and a graph:

Not freakin bad at all. Stage swirly 3D is nearly maxed out here, and I retained enough subs to make me non-upset.

The thing that impresses me the most (apart from of course making an entire IEM yourself) is the attention to detail with the O-rings. This is really an IEM made by someone who actually likes IEMs as opposed to those endless variations on a tuning theme out there.

I do in fact love the hell out of these IEMs. I wouldn’t be trying this hard if I didn’t hear a lot of X factor and magic. A lot of what im doing is to allow people to mod whatever they wanna try but also include a seriously amazing tuning out of the box. Doing both things isn’t easy but hey, I like a good challenge.

I can’t believe I haven’t been tuning into this project… A lot of real cool stuff happening! I’ve been secretly (well, not anymore) planning on making a super open IEM myself, so this is definitely worth watching

Even more awesome stuff.

@veebee I wanted to talk about this a little here. I really do hear a much more ‘open’ shell having less quarter wave reflections and thus a much more natural replay to sound. The main issue is always keeping open vents allowing reflections to dissipate but still capturing subbass and keeping the meat on the bones. This balance is extraordinarly hard. The pay off imo, its a much more open back headphone kind of sound, maybe earbuds. You get the idea.

We all appreciate your efforts.

Yeah, the balance would be without a doubt the most difficult part. The appeal to me is mostly spatial awareness and minimal occlusion effect, both are nice to have in certain scenarios.

For me, just allowing sound leakage helps fool my brain into thinking I’m not listening to something shoved into my ears. And yeah, minimal occlusion effect is very important since I do mountain running with IEMs constantly.

Trying a ‘passive rad’ Basically back chamber is sealed and then i apply a piece of mylar tape to a hole.. dumb but worth a try.

huh..

That took me like 2 minutes to try.. Been on my mind for awhile. Not sure but it certainly does a thing. Also that is not Anomaly, its project LSD (letshouer drivers).

Now that sounds like something I could trip on!

I’ve tested that LSD driver for a long time now. I love the uppers, and mids, but the bass is just not doing it for me at all. Its extremely like the Oxygen driver from years ago, or very similar. It also has weak stage and I really have to work hard to get it like %50 as good as the DM driver. Anyhooo

Been refining the BIG VENT™ idea. Today I nailed a balance that really doing it for me.

Idea 1: Twilight does not have nozzle vents, lets not have those and see

Idea 2: Bass and subs are just not doing it for me with 4x 1.5mm vents and if i put on the highest value dampers, it basically makes the entire feature not work. Lets decrease to 4x 1.0mm and try again.

Idea 3: The potato PR I made works really well actually, might have to spend a minute implementing it better

With these refinements (1.5mm x 4 vents → 1.0 x 4 vents), no noz vent (which were another 1.5x2), move the damper position closer to the driver, and shrink the nozzle by 1.5mm in length, im hearing some extreme magic. THANK GOD! It’s a lot like as if Twilight got its drivers replaced by the Dark Magician.

I think for the first time since i had this big vent idea in my head, it’s actually working fully from the bottom to the top of the FR. Will have to do some listening, but so far im extremely blown away. The 3D and imaging is off the charters.
